Sometimes I forget we do things differently in Chicago. The County Recorder of Deeds' office came under fire today when staff hung up Christmas stockings with dollar bills in them next to their work stations as a visual reminder that it's time to get out those Christmas tips.
Apparently, previous recorders had an official "tips Welcome" policy for the staff in a government office that provides copies of deeds and registers real estate transactions. In 1982 legislation barred staff from soliciting "tips" for doing their jobs.
The link below is a a Chicago Tribune story on the stockings, including a picture of them. Look at how many people defend the poor stockings and long for the days when you could get your transaction handled quicker by tossing a few dollars to the clerk.
And here I thought 7-11 tip jars were repulsive...

Goodness gracious.
That is tacky, yes, but get a load of what is going on at the Cook County Public Defender's Office. I know it is the Holidays and everyone is a little short on cash, but good grief...
Happy Holidays!

I love this city, but man, I still can't get over at how openly corrupt everything is here.
