A childhood favorite was THE VELVET ROOM by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. Set in California during the Depression, it's about a young girl named Robin whose migrant family settles in a small town working for Mr. McCurdy the local landowner. Robin befriends an old woman named Bridget who lives near the old McCurdy house (closed up when a new modern house was built). Bridget gives Robin a key that leads her eventually into the old house and a special room. I must have read that book dozens of times.
Edited to add I just found out that the book is back in print! Yay!!!
