Robb - I hate to say this because I really do respect the way you've been posting here -- but what you said is BS. Go to the message boards at nj.com or facebook and see how many people slam teachers as making too much money. No one did that when times were good. It goes both ways.

I actually agree with you that things need to change. The fact is, though, if the government wants to make these cuts claiming it's not meant to hurt the kids or hurt the teachers (which Christie has out and out SAID), the government should have stepped into the process of deciding where to make the cuts. They're not stupid - they know it's the teachers that will go. If the government cared, they would have stepped in. Christie DOES NOT CARE about the public schools, does not care about the middle class teachers, and does not care about the majority of children in this state.

Ha - I don't take them seriously - how could anyone? Especially when so many of them operate under such a severe lack of facts.

I know people are worried about their jobs. And though I know many people would take this the wrong way, teachers took their job at a low pay to do an important job (one EVERYONE agrees society could not function without). We had two expectations to make up for the low wages: benefits and security. Take those away, and I'm sorry, but as the Republicans know all too well, we have to watch out for ourselves before we can watch out for the kids we are working for. No one in their right mind, or no one of any quality, would go into teaching at terrible wages without the benefits and security that are a part of our compensation.

Yes, it's me. I'm ignorant and ridiculous.

I didn't say teaching is more important than other jobs. Again, putting words in my mouth.

Teaching IS an important job. If you don't feel that's true, then there's not a lot I can say that's going to change your mind.

Republicans can't seem to think for themselves (re: health care bill - not a single vote for it, really? NOT ONE Republican rep. agreed with it?). Your party tells you teachers are evil, so you bow down to Beck and Limbaugh and the rest of them and fall in line.

Just keep listening to the rhetoric and wait until they reach into your pockets.

Never mind. I know the jokes that follow.

i didn't say teachers were evil, i said you were an idiot. clearly you have issues with reading comprehension. i would think that would be a necessary skill for a teacher, but obviously not. i weep for your students and hope that your ineptitude is rooted out of the school system so the kids have a fighting chance.

Rob..I know that's where you can look up salaries..that's where I got the info. I go to board meetings, I've written the Star Ledger, The Jersey Journal, State and local legislators...no one cares. Really, what it comes down to, is that no one will listen unless the parents complain. In my school we are lucky to get 4 parents at a PTA meeting so that crowd is pretty apatehtic too.
School boards are starting to release where the cuts are being made. Once again adminstrative positions don't seem to be effected. The Governor's cuts are so massive that people are being laid off in spite of pay freezes.
Once again I think everyone agrees there needs to be reform. But to make this big of a cut in one shot is disasterous. Not only will this decimate some school budgets, but it's also going to discourage qualified people from going into teaching.
NJ School boards start to detail where cuts will be made

There is def. corruption in education but it is higher up and the people on the front lines are the ones who are effected the most. Our sup. met with teachers at the HS yesterday to personally hand out pink slips...she is here today and everyone is in a panic(nothing like telling someone they won't have a job next year and then expect them to go on and teach kids the rest of the day). As for the parents, we have been telling them about this since he was voted into office and really they don't give 2 craps about it. If they aren't being effected personally then it isn't their problem(even though their kids are). When they find out that the after school and before school care is cut and their kids are in a classroom with 40 other kids and 1 teacher then they are going to care and it will be too late

Also our Governor called for the wage freeze because everyone has to make sacrafices....well what is he giving up?(his Limo ride to work everyday, his expense account, his $60,000 he pays someone to twitter for him?) It seems the middle class are the ones giving up the most

I also like how he's specifically calling for a wage freeze for teachers for a year. Like this is new...my wages have been frozen for the past TWO years. Although, the administrator's union (NOT the NJEA) managed to get a new contract passed that included a pay increase.

I was able to finally find a list of all the associate superintendents/executive assistants/special assistants and directors in my district. THERE ARE OVER 45!!
Of course Christie hasn't mentioned this problem once. It's all being put on the backs of teachers. How come no one is talking about the unions that represent administrators? How come Chrisite is looking into real reform like consolidating school districts?
He also announced he's doing away with the Urban Enterprise Zone. So it's ok to take away a tax break that directly effects the less fortunate, but it's NOT ok to renew an income tax on the State's richest individuals.

We got our proposed budget cuts today. Other than the ridiculous lack of cuts to the central office, I have to say given the circumstances my district did the best they could in not going after teachers -- that is as long as the budget passes. Still, the worst of it is affecting the kids in terms of service -- extra curricular activities, busses and libraries seemed to take the brunt of it.

Of course, it's not about hurting the kids at all, right?
