I know many will mock me for this, but if you are having problems coming up with a gift for someone for Christmas, please consider giving to a charity in the name of the person you are buying for in replacement of a traditional gift. It really is more in the spirit of Christmas.
Here are some of my favorite wonderful charities to give to:

The best way, truly, is to do both.
My family doesn't do presents at Christmas. And my friends know they need to donate in my name to one of my charities. And all my friends know they will be getting a card from a charity.

Thanks for starting this thread, touchme.
A brave suggestion, Pal, knocking HRC off the list. Well done.
Stage, Heifer International is a fine charity, and you should be proud that someone made a donation in your name to them.
I have seven nieces and a nephew, and, in addition to their Christmas gift, I make a donation in each of their names to the Child of Hope project at Cathedral of Hope. When I became a godparent to one of them, I decided to take seriously the charge to demonstrate Christian values to them. Generosity does not always come easy, and I hope that my example will show them the joy of sharing what we have with others.
Now, on a slightly different note, a gay friend of mine's right-wing, fundamentalist Christian sister-in-law normally makes a donation in his name to Planned Parenthood. This year, however, she went out on a limb and donated in his name to Focus on the Family! He decided he would no longer make a donation in her name anywhere.

Posted: 12/24/06 at 11:40pmDBillyP, my parents have, in the past, donated to the southern baptist mission board in my name. I politely and respectfully asked them to donate to a cause we both could agree on. So, they don't donate to them, and I don't donate to NY Gay Men's Health Crisis.
