This is a most gracious and classy move by Bette. What other artists would do such a thing?

Very classy, indeed. I don't think many artists would do that. Just another reason to love Bette
"Good. More chances for ME! ME! ME!" - BJS
Master, you missed the second part of the BJS quote:
"Now if I can just get the old geezer and the lesbo to do the same thing I might actually have a chance!"
Exactly, Suleen! LOL!
As much as I would love Clooney to win the Grammy, every time Tony Bennett burps he wins one.
And by the by, I happen to like the Midler homage to Rosie album. A nasty critic in the Times, who reviewed Miss M's tour, dumped on the record as unsatisfying. I think it's successful, though I would've appreciated a few more numbers. Her version of "In the cool, cool, cool of the evening" is damn near definitive. Some folks want her to be all camp all the time, but away from the fish tail, the lady has a winning way with a simple melodic line.

I chalked "unsatisfying" up to the brevity of the cd. I would have liked "White Christmas" as a bonus extra track and one or two other songs on the main album. But perhaps the Times reviewer meant more than that. My friends and I all find ourselves listening to the cd often. Of course, we're all bunch of gay homosexuals, to quote Cartman.
I would have loved to hear her do a version of tennesee waltz or Old Cape Cod. She would, I'm sure, have done the latter beautifully. Her rendition of You'll Never Know caught the soft, touching quality of the song taht other singers have been not able to tap into in their versions.
Orion, she does Old Cape Cod on one of her older albums. The name escapes me at the moment.
Let me know if you happen to remember which album it is.

Why, Songs for the New Depression, of course. Now more than ever.
I love Bette, and I think this is one of the greatest things she has done; but I wonder if she would have done this if her album was not a tribute to someone nominated in the same category? If this were just a regular album and it were nominated, but still up against the late Rosie Clooney, would she still pull out of the race? I tend to think she woulnd't.
Perhaps not, theatrebaby, but the point is that she felt she could pay even more tribute to this woman who had such a great impact on many singers by saying "Don't even think of giving this award to me, cuz Rosie is the reason this album exists." That, to me is total class and proves that this album was truely a labor of love and not an attempt to make a buck off of someone else's fame.
Oh I absolutely agree Sueleen. And I think Bette is 100% right for doing this. Honestly, I think it makes the album that much more memorable to know that it was created out of respect and love, and not just for money and awards.
I'm pretty sure "Old Cape Cod" was sung originally by -- and a hit with -- Patti Page. It really wasn't a Rosie C. song.
I think you may be right Auggie. I think I'm wrong in attributing it to Rosie. It very well may have been Patti Page
