I understand Kraftwerk's unique place in the history of Electronic music, but I'm sorry, I saw them at Coachella a few years ago ('04?) and they were dull as can be. They just stood there as less than compelling images flashed behind them. Perhaps if they had a great light show or more interesting visuals it would have been worth the 20 minutes I wasted missing better performers. They're no Daft Punk.
This is a most disappointing Coachella lineup. I know they were just rumors, but with possible headliners Radiohead, David Bowie, REM, Prince, The Chemcial Brothersand and Smashing Pumpkins being mentioned in the last few weeks, this lineup comes up short.
How did they miss out on landing Goldfrapp, Feist, PJ Harvey, Chemical Bros?
I blame two things:
1. The move to a 3 day festival. It worked last year, but that was obviously a fluke. This year, they do not have enough name talent to spread across three days.
2. The new East Coast version of Coachella that I just know will have stronger headliners including, most likely, Radiohead.
I mean, come on. Jack Johnson?? Are you kidding me? You should visit the Coachella message board to see how much hate there is for that surfer.
And Portishead? Don't get me wrong. I'm thrilled that Portishead are back and look forward to their live performances, but they are hardly a big enough name to headline a day at Coachella.
And Roger Waters? Won't all of his fans be busy filling their prescriptions and writing letters to the editor of Reader's Digest?
I really think the 3 day spread is what's killing things the most. If we could have gotten Portishead, The Verve, The Breeders, MIA, Fatboy Slim, Santo Gold, MIA and Justice together on one day this thing would actually be worth attending. Unfortunately, it looks like Coachella, once considered the closest thing we have to Glastonbury, will be outshone by the likes of Bonaroo, Lollapalooza and the new E. Coast Coachella.
Shame. A low down, dirty shame.
