What would one expect from a Republican? A whitewash of the issue.

Riight. It's a matter of how the law is implemented and interpreted, papa.

KrissySim, Thanks for bringing up the issue.

I appreciate the genuine brand of caring you bring to this board.

don't give up, krissy, eventually you can stop all mining on earth and return the land to the animals once you thin out the human problem.

"with chicken little-esque sqwawking that the evil mining companies are going to kill everything! everything!!!"

Have you ever been to coal country? There is no such thing as clean coal not in mining or in energy production. It is very dirty and the mines that litter this nation are volatile, toxic and dangerous not to mention they destroy the landscape. The entire ecological landscape is impacted by our methods of mining.

You can debate this all you want, but if you live near any of these mines your property value drops immediately if the government hasn't already pushed you off the land. The water table becomes completely contaminated and the fish are not safe to eat. It is what is.

Yes there is a need for this country to be on coal but it's indefensible to call any of this "safe," or "clean." There are direct negative impacts and they are real.

Krissy...

I understand your concern but keep in mind that some municipalities have been dumping treated (and untreated) raw sewage into waterways. It's not a suitable topic for the cocktail circuit but what we put in us comes out of us and has to be disposed on somewhere.

I grew in a small town in the south which used to dump its raw sewage into an estuary. A meat processor also dumped unprocessed animal parts into as well for a spell. Lemme tell you, you'd find the biggest catfish in the region downstream but I digress.

I agree with Papa that treating mine runoff, storm water runoff and human waste is a very complicated topic, not meaning to insult your intelligence.

Yes it is a complicated issue, but I feel this OSM proposal is a mistake. I think the attorneys at The Center for Biological Diversity can give you further information on the proposal and its potential impact if you are interested. You can e-mail them at the CBD site.

Who needs to be unbiased on this issue? They have taken a stand on something they believe in. One does not become an environmental attorney for the money. One could make much more money being a corporate lawyer.

It is obvious that the coal industry is trying to push this through while Bush is still in power because they fear they may not be able to if Obama is elected.

What do you have to fear, anyway?

krissy, it's akin to taking foxnews at their word on issues.
