God, Savage just gets better and better looking.

"Someone's gotta soak those extra Mormon boys up."

"What America's wrestling with now is that you can't be pro-gay and anti-gay marriage."

"Soaking Up is what you do immediately after Saddle-Backing."

I am SO out of the loop . . .

Dan Savage was at the march last night with Jeff Whitty and Jake Shears.

In certain circles, that's considered three mega-stars.

While I have nothing but respect and admiration for the other two, it's Dan that has my heart.

Huh. None of you were living in Seattle in the early '00's when Dan would frequently rant in The Stranger AGAINST gay marriage. I wonder what caused the big turnaround.

It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

He got married.

And had a baby.

It happens.

Nope. This was all after that happened. I think he was really turning Log Cabin on us there for a while.

It seems like same-sex marriage has "tipped."

Ten-twenty years ago, few gay people were railing agaist same-sex marriage, much less straight people. And, in fact, many gays were opposed to it. We're "different" and why should we have to "conform" to the straight world, they said. Now it's a matter of "human rights."

Even a few years ago, when many *countries* were allowing same-sex marriage (Canada, Spain, etc.), it didn't seem like such a big deal in the U.S. Perhaps it seemed out of reach. I think because marriage was allowed in California… and then was taken away. That's what made people wake up.

In many ways, Proposition 8 may be the thing that helps ignite the LGBT community (and straight supporters), and restores activism, which had died down from the 70's (gay liberation) and 80's (AIDS).

So I don't see this as such a bad thing; it's the start of something good.

Edit to add: Gay people need to stop the finger-pointing (African-Americans, Mormons, etc.) if this campaign is to succeed. Think Obama: he did not scapegoat people, he did not talk about some Americans being better than others. It's not 'if you're not with us, you're against us.' Mediate. Negotiate. Let people see what we all have in common.

Coach Bob knew it all along: you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows. (John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire)

i think i flipped past him on some rant-fest last night...maybe it was AC360? Savage was doing a pretty good job....didn't recognize the opposing talking head.

AC360: Dan Savage Takes on Tony Perkins Over Prop 8

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

tanx, MRMW.

"You strip me of my rights, and I interrupt you...who's really suffering here?" Nice line.
