Alright- I need some input here....
for college auditions, I have to pick a ballad and an uptempo....my uptempo is very jazzy and comedic....my ballad that I am thinking of choosing is very dramatic and...on the operatic side (Porgy and Bess). Do you think I could use it?
Porgy and Bess is one of those debatable pieces between opera and musical theater...what do you think?

I think it depends on the song and what you're doing with it. If you're thinking about doing Summertime, it could go either way. You could pull a Fantasia and put it in a weird key and belt the bejeesus out of it, or you could just sing it in your legit voice.
Patty Thom, the voice director at BoCo recommends auditioning with a belt piece and a legit piece for MT, so you could probably get away with it.
I think if you can sing this in the original key in a proper legit style you can have an extremely successful audition. "Summertime" is not an easy piece to pull-off. Best of luck!
Cheers,
Christopher
