I know lots of you are stressing out about finding the perfect material for your auditions. As I was going through my music I remembered my audition from a couple years ago. I found some music that could work well as not over-done stuff in case you're trying to go on the unique material.

"Why Was I Born" from Sweet Adeline-This is a beautiful legit soprano piece. Begins on high E and goes up to a high G.

"I'll Be Hard to Handle" from Never Gonna Dance-Amazing character number for a belt/mixer. Only goes up to a Db...a fun song for something in a mid-tempo.

"You Are Love" from Show Boat-great for either a girl or a guy, tenor or soprano. In the original key this song goes to a high B flat. Wonderful legit piece that is from the golden age of musicals.

"A Foggy Day" from the film "A Damsel in Distress" by Gershwin. For a baritone this well known standard but you have a wonderful opportunity to make a lot of your own with this piece.

"They Didn't Believe Me" from "The Girl from Utah"-good baritone ballad with great potential for a legit sound.

"Look For the Silver Lining" from "Sally"- great ballad for legit soprano-high F. Mid-tempo

Some "newer" choices:

"Alone at the Drive In" from "Grease"-great tenor ballad that I've never once ran into at an audition in 11 years of performing. Good opportunity to show off your falsetto range (high D)

"I Wanna go to Hollywood" from "Grand Hotel". Great belt number for a girl who can play an engenue with some sex-appeal. Jane Krakowski was the original-talk about sex-appeal. Beyond that; this number is wonderful for acting values.

"I Resolve" from "She Loves Me". A lesser done piece from this particular show, "I Resolve" is a GREAT character piece for a belter.

"How Could I Ever Know" from "The Secret Garden." For someone with a great range this powerful ballad can be a wonderful song for someone who can emotionally connect to Lily's pain as well as sell the vocal aspect of it. The OBC with Rebecca Luker is amazing and you can hear the emotions in her voice so well.

"Hold Down the Fort" from "john & jen" is a nice belt/mix mid-tempo ballad. A number that is perfect as far as age-appropriateness, if you can connect with leaving a sibling or loved-one really well this song can be sold very well.

"It Took Me a While" from "john & jen" for guys is a great driving ballad. The song is pretty rangy, but the 32 measure cut at the end is a wonderful piece to utilize your acting values of maturing into a man.

"Once in a While" from "The Rocky Horror Show", one of the songs cut for the film. Wonderful baritone number. Nice mid-tempo song that gives you opportunity to show off a rock/pop sound.

OK my fingers are tired from typing. I know that these are probably not the best of suggestions but I was trying to think of stuff I've seen at my university done maybe once at our big cattle call that I found interesting as it wasn't necessarily from shows such as J&H, Aida, Hairspray, etc. Break a leg to you all and I hope you get accepted into your #1 school!

Cheers,

C.
