ok, im going to be graduating in a year and i really need to start thinking about what i want to do with my life. i love theater and enjoy doing nothing else. i took many theater classes in high school and i also participated in every production. one thing i can see myself doing is Theater Education. i would love to be a theater teacher and direct high schools shows. however, i also would love to try to get to new
york and audition. My question is, do you think there is a chance in the world that i could be successful at auditions with a theater education major???? this may be an absolutely insane question, but i've just been thinking about it a lot.

Posted: 1/7/10 at 12:10amYes! There are plenty of successful performers who didn't major in theatre at all, and some didn't even go to college!

of course! In fact, you want a college degree that can find you employment in fields that are less unstable than acting. You could teach in HS, you could direct, its a wonderful degree to get.
As far as auditioning? you've been doing well without the college degree so far. Take some time in college to take classes and get lessons and improve where you need to, then audition!

Posted: 4/9/10 at 4:21amMy sister got a master's degree in Educational theater at NYU but her BFA was in Drama at NYU. She said that she was really glad she learned solid technique in undergrad and reall got out there and auditioned and THEN studied education in grad school because it made her a better teacher.
