College Students/Alcoholics?

My school is a dry campus... well, is supposed to be. Because of this, most parties are off campus and people feel that they can drive back to school drunk. One of the kids I was driving last night kept saying that he's a good drunk driver. There's no such thing.

Exactly, or we snuck it into the dorms as well. I think a lot of campuses are dry. But, you wouldn't know it because some of the RA's don't care either.

A friend of mine actually started a good business for herself. She called her business "Safe Ride Sam," and she would give people rides to and from campus to parties and the bars, and she only charged $1 per ride. She made a ton of money doing it too.

Is there really such thing as a dry campus?

Personally, I don't think there is. Every college in the country will tell you that they're a 'dry' campus. No school is going come out and say that they allow their students to drink.

At my school, one of the things they ram down people's throats during freshmen orientation is that we are a "dry" campus. All it does is force the majority of the drinking off campus. People go to the bars and restaurants down the street from campus (most of them don't ID) and drink up a storm. I myself am not a heavy drinker but I do a little social drinking from time to time. I've never gotten so drunk that I've blacked out or passed out or anything.

I swear, some people here insist on demonizing everything "mainstream". There's nothing wrong with drinking alcohol as long as you're being sensible about it, just like there's nothing wrong about listening to music other than cast recordings or the solo albums of theatre performers.

Oh I totally agree.... 100%. Some kids really just don't know when enough is enough.. and the days start to pile up. I have mono now and it's actually nice not having to drink anything (i'm not a huge drinker.. but a beer is nice)...

I really think schools should take more approaches to making students aware.

However, a vast majority of the kids who do sneak in beers are the perfect example of someone who is ultra shady.

Oh please. I knew lots of people who snuck beer into their dorms and I wouldn't describe any of them as "shady". I'm sure other posters here could do the same. Sneaking beer into a dorm room is against the rules at many schools but it doesn't mean no one does it. It's not a "shady" act. It's a youthful one. My campus wasn't exactly a dry campus. If you were 21 you could have beer in your room.

The thing is, though, that very few college students are sensible about it! One of the people I was driving was supposed to be the DD for the rest of the people that ended up piling into my car.

I get what you guys are saying. I go to a really Greek-heavy school, and we've never even been under the impression that we're a dry campus. Thus, drinking runs rampant. I do drink a lot, but I also handle myself pretty well when I'm intoxicated...and I almost always go to bars/clubs/concerts far away from my school to avoid that kind of thing. What's annoying about a lot of college students is that, like so many others have said, they are usually away from home for the first time and don't know how to control themselves yet. They don't know that praying to the porcelain gods makes you look like a damn fool, they think it means they're "bad ass." Many kids go through this, but on different timelines...I learned how to pace myself and get just the right amount of drunk when I was a junior in high school, but that was after a LOT of stupid incidents. These kids'll figure it out eventually, but when alcohol is as easy to get as it is and there is no real responsibility yet in their lives, they're going to overindulge. And that's obnoxious for the rest of us who don't run around and scream "BRO! I'M GETTING SHWASTED DUDE, YEAH!", but it makes sense and I can't say I really blame them.

I'm not sure I'd call them alcoholics. Partying is a big part of college culture and has been for a long time. Sure, some kids might get stuck in this mindset in the long run, but more will outgrow it. Like I said, I drink pretty steadily, but there's never a time when I think "I NEED IT! I HAVE TO HAVE IT!" And back in my rebellious teen years, there were a couple of those times.
