I just went into our break room to get a drink and spotted this story on Faux News and they were interviewing Mr. Ortiz and his lawyer. This guy was as slick and smarmy as can be.

Two facts jumped out at me:

1. Mr. Ortiz's English skills are very lacking
2. The anchor (I think it was Gretchen Carlson but I'm not sure) kept asking if Mr. Ortiz is a US citizen and the lawyer wouldn't answer. His only reply was that it had no bearing on the case. She finally came out and said that Mr. Ortiz is not believed to be a US citizen.

Those two facts just scream "ambulance chaser" to me. I highly doubt that Mr. Ortiz had this idea himself and this lawyer saw the fact that Mr. Ortiz doesn't speak/understand much English as a way to manipulate him.

According to Faux News the lawsuit started out as a civil suit against the man who drove the car that struck him and pushed him into the river. Then it grew to this. My other issue with this is if you start suing the county is that there might not be enough man power to save the next guy.

When I trained years ago to be a lifeguard we were told that if you rescue someone as a good Samaritan (without your Red Cross certification) you could not be sued if something went wrong during the rescue BUT once you have your Red Cross certification you were responsible to follow protocol and could be sued if you did something wrong.

Yes - the lawsuit sounds a bit sketchy.
Unfortunately, we live in a very litigious society with lazy people who want to make money off anyone they can with little or no effort on their own part.
