I thought after Miss Harris had her stroke, she would retire, but now I have heard that my beloved Miss Harris is shooting a movie called "Forgive Us Our Treapasses"....I know she has had to cancel some stage projects in the past.....but movies may be easier for her to do now....I am so pleased......Also.... Happy Birthday Julie Harris....Dec 2.....
Kristie, this news warms my heart! Thank you so much.

That's wonderful. I'm so glad this talented woman is working again- actors today have SO MUCH to learn from her! A true class act.
Ford's Theatre in DC will be presenting "Member of the Wedding" this February. In association with this event, the Smithsonian Institution has arranged for an interview with Ms. Harris on Feb. 10. Notice of this event came to Smithsonian Associate members but it wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't end up being open to others. When I picked up my ticket the Associates staffer told me that this was garnering so much interest that they might have to find a larger venue or have it on more than one night.

I honestly didn't know she had had a stroke - I'm so glad she's doing well enough to keep up the life she desires - she deserves it, and we are blessed to have whatever it is that she is capable of sharing.
DG, I was privileged to work with Ms. Harris in 1997 during production of THE GIN GAME - it was not long after that, while out of town, that she didn't show up for work one night and a member of stage management found her at her residence, having been stricken. I still remember exactly where I was when I received the phone call.
It was in Chicago and the play she was doing was "Fossil"...I was going to fly in to see her performance....Oh Rath...what was it like to work with this Legend?
Kristie, it was an amazing experience just to be in her presence. No matter what tornadoes are swirling in your life, as soon as you enter a room Julie is in, you are as serene as a Buddha. There's just something about her...so full of love and grace...
I met her in Seattle...I saw her performance of Scent of the Roses 5 times....It was the Greatest Theatre experience of my life.....I was lucky to get to go to her closing night party....She was devine.....and so sweet.....I didn't know what to say......Blah.....Blah.......she just smiled and signed my playbill.....I adore her......... Yes, she is wonderful - not one ounce of "Star Attitude" about her - she is a real, true human being, who treats everyone around her as an equal. Even if she wasn't one of the most brilliant actors we will ever see - if she were a teacher or a nurse or a housewife - she would be one of the most extraordinary people you could ever meet. I will never lose the awe I feel for even getting to be in her presence - to have been someone she trusted.
i really didn't know who julie harris was.
until someone mentioned her a couple of months ago on the board.
then i googled her to see what she has been in.
after that i rented two films: east of eden and member of the wedding.
she's amazing.
i want to get my hands on "i am a camera".
i recently caught her on a "knots landing" re-run on SOAPNet.
she's a very versatile and much respected actress.
she has gained a new admirer.
nice to hear she is still working.

I always liked Julie Harris. I remember listening to her in a recording called Spoon River Anthology when
I was in High School. It was on a phonograph. Iam old.
rath, thanks for sharing your personal experiences with miss harris ... so wonderful to hear. i've loved julie harris since i first listened to a caedmon recording of THE GLASS MENAGERIE in which she played LAURA. i used to listen to that LP over and over. she was brilliant in MEMBER OF THE WEDDING. also wonderful in EAST OF EDEN and I AM A CAMERA. quite a versatile actress. she is one actress i've always wanted to see in person. so sorry i missed her in GIN GAME.

On his audio commentary for BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE, Rick McKay mentions that he had just spoken to Harris (this was about two months ago or so) and that she said that her physical therapy had gone really well, to the point that she felt well enough to get on stage and act in a play at her local theatre. I guess this shows not only her extraordinary dedication to the stage, but also how much acting must mean to her. Something tells me that as long as air is left in her body, Julie Harris will be performing on stage. God bless her.
oh, i forgot to mention THE BELLE OF AMHERST, which i also loved. thank god they showed that on tv! (must have been PBS.)
Yes, Margo, that is absolutely true. That's why I was so heartened to hear of her working - I know she would not be content if she didn't have a character to work on. That is where her purpose lies.

THE BELLE OF AMHERST has just been released on DVD through Kino Video. But why aren't EAST OF EDEN or THE MEMBER OF THE WEDDING available? They not only contain the work of Julie Harris but Elia Kazan, Fred Zinnemann and JAMES DEAN, for Chrissake! While we're on the subject, why is every stinkin' Adam Sandler comedy on the market but no THE HEIRESS, THE NUN'S STORY, or CHEYENNE AUTUMN? I mean, JOHN FORD! These classics will still be entertaining audiences for generations to come when Sandler's junk will be so much decomposing nitrate! When will movie studios stop thinking in the short term? awfully glad to hear about AMHERST, mm! thanks for the news :) fortunately, i have a good vhs recording of EDEN. but my recording of WEDDING is not so good
"gingerbread! now there's a word to take your hat off to!"
I am asking Santa for "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln"......She got a Tony for this performance on Broadway.........I saw this movie when I was a kid and all I remember is how Mary Todd Lincoln goes insane at the end and how awful the US treated her.....Hope Santa is listening
