Comparing Actors Past and Present

Since I enjoy Raising Hope, I was wondering if Martha Plimpton had any comparison from the past?

She has the sardonic delivery of Elaine Stritch but Martha isn't as strident. She's not squeaky enough to be a Jean Harlow, a bit too sardonic to be a Myrna Loy. I think maybe a bit too funny to be a Barbara Stanwyck.

Does she have a comparison from the past?
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

taz, I think Eve Arden was like that, but Martha has a more dry delivery than Eve had. And Eve seemed giddy where Martha is not.

Rose Marie on the Dick van Dyke Show maybe? I know you went for film actors but I think it seems fair to compare her current work to the same form of the past.

But there is something to her style. She has not really changed it. She acted well beyond her years as a teen.

"I think maybe a bit too funny to be a Barbara Stanwyck."

You don't think Stanwyck was funny? Fortunately, Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges and Frank Capra disagreed with you. If they hadn't, we might never have had Stanwyck's classic performances in Ball of Fire, The Lady Eve and Meet John Doe.
