Computer recording troubles

ok. I guess it's true. Once you hit 30, every piece of technology is a newfangled contraption and you cannot grasp it.
I used to a whiz at figuring out hardware/software issues but now I'm old and toothless.
Anyway, I just got a new notebook computer. Everything works swimmingly well. I have a free recording program (Audacity) that SHOULD allow me to record both from my mic/line in jack, cd music played from a media program AND record in from sources such as Skype or AIM chat.
Inexplicably, it's NEVER an option to record from any source besides CD or microphone. Furthermore, it'll only record from one source at a time.
Anyone have ANY ideas on how to fix this? because the computer's new, I did go through all the update checks through my software website and I do have the latest drivers for my audio hardware.
