In English class today, I received an assignment to create a product that will inspire people to take action against a cause you believe in. Can anyone think of any controversial topics that have to do with theatre?

You could write about the landmark status of the Broadway Theater District and how the city and other foundations have helped keep all the Brodway Theaters in operation instead of tearing them down like many "Big Buisnesses" want tto in order to errect skyscrapers.
Just a thought. I have some info if you are interested.

hmmm- that would be a very interesting topic. I'll think about it some more, and PM you if that is my final choice! Thank you!

You could write about gay marriage.

Or AIDS research.

Obviously not directly connected to theatre.

But still...

You could write about controversial regional productions that were protested or banned--The Laramie Project, Angels in America, Corpus Christi and Inherit the Wind to name a few.

er, none of you has said anything about THE PRODUCT....that's the point of the assignment.....he's not writing about a great cause, he has to create a product....

What an odd assingment.

But really, are you saying theatre is a "cause" you believe in?

I can't think of a THING to do with theatre. I thought of a good non theatre related product. I think the key would be that your product would have to cause some kind of side effect that people were against. The home abortion kit was the first thing that came to mind. Nausiating? yes, but it would get you talked about.

Perhaps theatre related, you could come up with a product to put in the home or like a card that a person would carry that would cause the taxes they would normally pay to support something they don't like, to go directly to federal funding of the arts. Oh, like the percentage of taxes that a person pays that would normally go toward Congressional, Senatorial and Executive salaries now would go to the funding of the Arts. Or choose something else that you don't like. Whatever, the important thing is the redirecting of funds in the Arts. Most Republicans do not support the funding of the Arts.

Take action "against" a cause you believe in?
Does that mean if you want to eradicate aids, you invent a product that spreads it?

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

No, from what I read, they want the students to create a something that will create controversy and cause people to act up against whatever the creator was trying to help.

ie, Pro-Choice Movement ~> Student invents the abortion pill. it's affordable, widely available ~> Pro-lifers are guaranteed to go nuts.

What about a History of Theatre museum? A one story building where they have flyers from different shows and the businesses that have become Broadway staples over the years. They should have pictures of these businesses as before and after. Before being the way they are now, after being some huge sky scraper or a parking structure. Make it look like all the character and life of Broadway has been torn away. You could create a flyer for this museum.
