Question: If I were to record a cd of songs from my rep for my senior project next year(ie, mostly musical theatre and some standards) do I need permission?
I wasn't sure since you don't need permission to use something out of a piano/vocal book for performance but I thought recording might be different...
Does anyone know how to go about getting said copyrights?

The original question is very much a signpost for 'our' times (WGA notwithstanding). How do composers and lyricists make a living? Think about it....
Their work is performed for live auditions... then the audition is reproduced and distributed no charge. How does that effect the value of the music and the words? It might add-value / it might decrease?
There are no pat answers... I know as a composer/lyricist, I would like to be asked for gratus-use. I would like to know especially at the beginning of a career. Now does Stephen Sondheim want to know (?)
In my own situation the tables are reversed.... I rely on the performing generosity of actor/singers to allow the use of their talents to my recordings so that maybe some kind of critical mass can be created at some point that we can all benefit from...
I guess I am asking for some thought to be applied....
