She certainly travels into an alternative reality, but it's diminishing the nature of that reality to dismiss it as "escaping into a fantasy world". It's hardly an escape *into* either, as Coraline - much like Dorothy before her - carries the attitude almost from the beginning that "well, that was interesting, but I'd REALLY like to go home now. Can I? No, really, I want to go home dagnabbit!".
Sure, the idea of being in an alternative reality and working through an adventure and going home again has been done before. There being only seven basic plots for every work of fiction ever, you'd be hard-pushed to find a story that hasn't been done before. It's the details that make things stand out, and Coraline has a whole heap of creep that means it would be a massive disservice to dismiss it on the grounds you've seen The Wizard of Oz, or The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, or whatever.
The film mayn't have owt to do with Burton, but Selick was the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, so if one is a Burton fan, it's not too unreasonable to find oneself equally intrigued by this film. :3
