I saw this at movie at Blockbuster today and it said it was in tradition of Ganster movies and musicals. I almost grabbed it but didn't. Has anyone seen it? If so, how is it.......should I rent it?

The lead performances by Gere and Lane have been debated since the movie was released. The supporting cast is SUPERB - and the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard. Trivia - Gere plays his own horn in the set pieces his character plays in. Lonette McKee's version of Ill Wind is one of the greatest things ever. You also get the Hines Brothers dancing together.
sounds like I should rent this - joeyjoe was playing the soundtrack last week and Lonette's version of ILL WIND is one of the best I've ever heard - just the right tempo and phrasing - very sultry...I loved it.

As I said, the lead performances you're either going to respond to or you're not. However, the film as a whole is gorgeously produced, and the story is well told. Lane was only 19 when it was filmed.
seven words why you should rent this movie:
FRANCIS FORD COPOLLA GREGORY HINES LONETTE McKEE... 'nuff said... ENJOY!
