Yay - even though I use CL only intermittently to buy stuff, and ONLY in person, in public.
How come the back pages of the pretentious NY Mag are never legally challenged? Because it's a glossy, upper crust phony NYC chronicle (paid for by hooker, plastic surgery ads?)
What about the Village Voice? For decades, no problem w/classifieds.
People are going to be stupid (throughout history), no matter what the "messenger" is. Before technology, I'm sure the cavemen pimps had ways of advertising....
Edit: Parents just have to be extra vigilant in teaching their kids
street smarts with everything.

I don't think that New York Mag is challenged because the ads aren't for prostitution but rather for "escort" services. Now, I know that that is basically prostitution but the way that it is done and the way that it is advertised are not as straightforward as those ads seen on craigslist. You also have to keep in mind, for a vast majority of posts on craigslist are posts that people make for free. There are a small handful of sections that one needs to make a very small payment to post there. I believe that if you're looking to hire someone you would need to pay to post a want ad on the site.
However , their biggest money maker was the "erotic" section. So in terms of money I could see why they wouldn't have wanted to do anything. Also, with thousands upon thousands of subsites for different regions of different sections of different countries it is impossible for them to keep control over every little one.
