Anyone here a member of Curves fitness center?

Looking into a new gym, would love to hear if this has been an effective workout place for people.

My mom used to go to it, She enjoyed it, the only problem was that it was way too small and you would have to wait for machines.

I know people who love the gym, but hate the politics of the franchise's owner.

My mother was a member of 4 years, I think since it opened (at least in PA and also NC).

She recently went to a new gym for women - BUTTERFLIES. Nothing against Curves, it's just much closer and is just as good apparently.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

It's a good place, very encouraging, but their hours suck in the evening.

My mom and a few of my aunts went for a while, but they quit because of the overcrowding and because of the hours.
I went with them as a guest once and for someone who is older and hasn't exercised in years or ever, it's very good. However, if you're younger and at all athletic, you're going to want something more intense.

But, it's like any diet or exercise program, it works if you actually stick with it.

I joined two years ago, but only went a few times. The hours are inconvenient for working women and it was always very crowded. It's an older crowd, Liotte. Lots of women in their 50s and 60s (at least the one I went to).

Are there Butterflies or PACE gyms in NYC?

Bluemoon, you're right about me not so much wanting the older crowd scene...

And Shameless, I'm definitely more of an athletic person, so maybe this isn't the place for me.

I went with my mom a couple of times. I really liked the curcuit training aspect of it. You spend like 5 mintues or so on each machine then move on. I liked that for the A.D.D in me. But other than that it was WAY to crowded!

Personally, I can't push myself hard enough unless I go to a gym that offers classes such as kick boxing, step, etc.

liotte, then Curves is definitely not the place for you. :) Why not join a regular gym?

Um, why bother with these stupid things?

Do your own research, and do it yourself.

Get a membership (if you are in NY) to the New York Sports Club or something (also the same type of thing in Bosotn and other areas.. forget the name of the company) and exercise.

It's up to you, and only you to truly lose weight and stick with a routine that works for you. I would suggest researching on diets, actually I don't like that word, just correct eating habits. Eat well, and eat the right amounts (less than maintance level) and exercise to also burn those calories.

If you do some research and exercise (in any aerobic way) and eat correctly... and STICK TO IT CONSISTENLY - you'll lose weight, simple as that.

Just my advice to the poster and to anyone else even.

I don't think those curves type programs are needed, altho if you have weak willpower and can't do all this yourself, they are definetly beneficial. I would just tell you... if you do it yourself, it will become a lifestyle.

JayKid, this board is to ask opinions. I have done research on many places and wanted to hear some advice from people who may have gone to the facility.
I know the options like NYSC and Crunch and Equinox and Synergy and everything else, but again, it's good to hear what people actually think of these places, and this board is as good as any.
Lastly, why do you assume that I want to lose weight and don't have a healthy diet? I never said that. There are plenty of other reasons why people go to the gym.

I'm a member of 'It Figures' which is a lot like curves. I've been working out for a few weeks now and lost 9 lbs, my legs look awesome and my arm muscles are b e a utiful. I've been working out for prom so getting the right parts (under arms, little fat pockets by the armpits) are essential.

I love it, I've never had a problem waiting for machines and such. And It's nice to sometimes just go in there and run and work out all my stress.

It figures and curves is wonderful. And It Figures also has tanning... so it's a two for one deal. 24 for unlimited tanning... yay!
