"Jason, Erika, and all, I have never seen Schindler's List, Amadeus, Hotel Rwanda, Munich, or Good Night And Good Luck."
WHAT!
Oh my.. no wonder you're so delusional.
"unfortunatly, the theatre is no different. It's not about art, it's about making money."
Yes, but as playwrights, we're able to atleast have a say in what happens to our work. Playwrighting and novel writing is the truist written art form, IMO.
It sucks to be a screenwriter.

Caroline-Q-or-TBoo:
Tell that to the investors who put their money out there for WELL, GREY GARDENS, or PASSION, knowing very well that that money may be lost--but they took the risk because they thought the art was worth a shot at being seen and heard out in the big leagues.

yes, but did those shows succeed financially? (Obviously, we cannot speak about Grey Gardens yet)
Movie producers do the same thing, put their money in individual projects that have artistic merrit. Sometimes they succeed financially, sometimes they don't. It's still mostly about money.
The great thing for theater is that they have off-broadway. Companies like The Public, Playwrights Horzions, Atlantic etc(...) keeping alive the art.
did that make ANY sense?

Money makes the world go round.
But art makes it a wondeful ride?

WBF -- entertainment is something that causes you to forget about your problems for some time and experience enjoyment while doing so. While there are clearly forms of entertainment that involve more than viewing (ie atheletics, roller coasters etc.) I'm going to focus on media (visual and aural) since this is a theater board.
Some people find NASCAR to be entertainment, some find mental stimulation in the form of high art to be entertainment, some find Johnny Knoxville getting kicked in the groin repeatedly to be entertainment. Who is ANYBODY to dictate what someone else will find entertaining? Certainly not all art forms will apply to all people. While some art forms will require some more mental involvement than others (it takes a lot more work on the part of the viewer to be swept up in a Hitchcock thriller than it does to watch a Pauly Shore film - hence the difference in higher art versus baser forms), it's hard to deny the fact that many people ARE entertained by things that require no mental work whatsoever. The sad truth of our society is that most people are not that intelligent - they would prefer to watch the WWE to Arrested Development. I would tend to fall on the side of those who like using their brain for entertainement (hence my interest in most forms of theater) rather than watching Paris Hilton say "That's hot" every two seconds, but I don't begrudge anyone enjoying any form of entertainment - no matter how base it is.
Movies is an all-encompassing art form. While there are films that you can watch by just shutting off your brain and letting it flow over you, there are plenty of films (including many named already in this thread) that actively engage the mind and maybe might change the way you view the world a little bit. Even if a film doesn't revolutionize the world, what's wrong with escaping for a couple of hours into another world?

Cruel - are you really dismissing the film because of a minor technical glitch?
I actually found this to be a fairly disturbing piece - much more than I anticipated. And I disagree that it had nothing to say. The comments on the current administration's rush to condemn - and the reasons behind their choices - were reason enough for the movie, to me at least.
