Brilliant?
the movie? YES!
my skin is so delicate, i don't dare expose it.
we must get together and talk about the civil war sometime.
oliver! ducky!
"i was reading a book the other day. a nutty sort of a book. all about civilization or something. you know, the guy said that modern machinery was going to take the place of every profession."
"oh, my dear, that's something YOU need never worry about."

Ooh, I love this movie. It's one of my favorites. What an amazing ensemble. All those great actors in one movie? Incredible.
yes, right up there with the all-star GRAND HOTEL!
I love how Jean Harlow talks to Wallace Beery. One of the great on-screen bad marriages...and, perhaps, THE funniest.
I did the play a number of years ago. I assume that the 2002 Broadway revival was not very good since it only lasted 45 performances. Christine Ebersole and Marian Seldes were both nominated in the featured actress category. Anyone see it?
pab, you're a smart cookie - never assume that because something doesn't last for long means it's not very good!
The 2002 DINNER AT EIGHT revival was one of the most deliciously entertaining shows I saw that year. Wonderful performances (especially Ebersole) and drop-dead 1930s costumes by Catherine Zuber that seemed that the spirit of Adrian had posessed her soul!
Harlow: I told you never to talk to me when I'm doin my lashes!
Harlow to Berry: Who do you think you're talkin to? That first wife of yours out in Montana? That poor mealy faced thing with her flat chest who didn't have the nerve to talk up to you?
Beery to Harlow: Listen you little piece of scum, you!
plus Billie Burke's nervous breakdown: "...and...and...having to send for crabmeat. CRABMEAT!!"
Not to forget Marie Dressler as Carlotta and that maid of Jean Harlow (Tina?)
Brilliant? Indeed!
MasterLcZ, yes, you are quite correct, I've also seen some brilliant shows that did not last very long. Any idea why such a sort run for that show? The cast sounds great.
The revival was delightful in every respect. The cast, across the board, was wonderful, including Ebersole and Emily Skinner. Visually, you could not have asked for a more luscious evening in the theater. While I loved the set for LA BOHEME, John Lee Beatty's work on this production was, quite simply, robbed of the Tony. My jaw literally dropped every time a new set appeared.
Hi AndyHardy! Tina, Jean Harlow's maid, was played brilliantly by Karen Morley, whose career was destroyed by the Blacklist.
Interestingly, she was first named to the House Un-American Activities Committee when actor Larry Parks broke down under the interrogation and gave up the names of some of his former friends.

I have never seen this! Netflix - here I come!
A classic from start to finish. Every time I see this film, I fall in love with Marie Dressler all over again. She set the standard for hilarious, campy dowagers for the rest of time.
I also remember the TV movie "remake" about 15 years ago (roughly). Marsha Mason was in it. Dreadful.
billie burk's rant makes me howl!
"you don't know what REAL trouble is! EITHER of you!"
A great film--any scene with Harlow--she had to be sewn into that dress and couldn't sit down--John Barrymore playing a role that hits SO close to home and of course Dressler--I think she's better here than in Min and Bill for which she own her Oscar.
Just popped the DVD in.
This should be fun!
This was just on TCM the other night, and, of course, I had to watch it. Never mind that I own it. Had to watch it again.
The movie is FULL of priceless dialogue..."I was reading a book the other day...(insert Marie Dressler tripping)...the nuttiest kind of a book...all about the future. Do you know they say that machines will take over every profession?"
Glebb...you know the line....
:) and love your av justme2!
Loving this flick.
Harlow is killing me.
I see that Norma Cassidy was a tribute to her.
Harlow is good in any dose. I hope you have enjoyed her sassiness in "Red Headed Woman" or "Red Dust" or "Bombshell" (one of my personal Harlow favorites). Damn she's good.
And to think Harlow initially had no acting aspirations...
Well, when you got it...ya got it! To think she died so young as well...26 and in the middle of "Saratoga".
Anyone here seen that? It's bizarre at the end, as they had a stand in with big hats play her for the last 20 minutes of the film. You never see Harlow's face, just the body of the stand in, and an impersonator doing the voice over of her lines.
The fans demanded the movie be released though, and the studio came up with the best solution they could.
