Baby steps! Baby Steps! We don't want to miss the miracle!!!

From Politico.com:

At the same time the Obama administration is taking some initial steps toward dismantling the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell" policy, the Justice Department is continuing to vigorously defend the policy in federal court, angering gay activists in the process.

The latest point of friction with gay advocates is a brief filed Monday night in federal court in California that repeatedly quotes from retired Gen. Colin Powell’s statements nearly two decades ago in favor of the gays-in-the-military ban without noting that Powell has since reversed himself on the issue.

“This is pretty shocking,” said Richard Socarides, the White House liaison to the gay community under President Bill Clinton. “When Powell said this 18 years ago, it was inflammatory and incendiary. ... [Powell]’s now said this stuff isn’t even true anymore.”

In his State of the Union speech earlier this year President Barack Obama said he would work to repeal the ban on gays in the military because “it’s the right thing to do," and both Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Michael Mullen went before Congress to argue for repeal. Powell issued a statement endorsing the efforts, saying that since the policy was enacted, “attitudes and circumstances have changed.”

Roscoe, why don't you join the Tea Party? Sounds like they would welcome you with open arms.

I think the DOJ is so far behind the curve on this -- it seems like the DOD on the other hand seems like they are trying to loosen the restrictions. This is now an even touchier subject for me having just been released from TRADOC. The thing I noticed about what's screwed up, especially during initial training, is there are bans against *all* fraternization: and there are not enough repercussions against the behavior when it is caught, regardless of sexual preference - and that IS a problem. Indeed, it a huge one in my opinion.

I rarely agree with Roscoe, but as far as I'm concerned, his criticism of this is fully justified. How many mixed messages can this administration send out, before people start complaining? Either, you want to dismantle DADT...or you want to keep it...you can't f'ing have it both ways. If you want to dismantle it...then don't defend it.

Romantico, that's cute and all, but are you really not seeing a problem with this?

I'm torn. I want an end to DADT but I don't want people like Roscoe to have any rights whatsoever.

I don't disagree with him.I am not happy about this. As a matter of fact I have said I understand his frustration and I agree with him almost always. However, having said that judging by some of his posts regarding Obama I have to wonder if he would have preferred McCain and Palin in the White House instead.

So is the article I posted a pack of lies? Is Obama's administration not defending DADT in court, and citing Colin Powell in doing so even though Powell has himself reversed himself on that issue?

Dear deluded romantico. That pathetic delusion that those who criticize Obama must have been McCain supporters. Such a lame response.

It's not the article.Where did I say it was packed with lies? It's just your hatred towards this President.God knows I have issues with Obama but I have to ask.Would you have been happier if McCain and Palin were in charge.

Dear dear Romantico.

No. I would not prefer to have had McCain and Palin in charge.

Happy now? Criticizing Obama for his ongoing refusal to honor his commitment to his gay constituents with anything other than speeches does not indicate support for McCain Palin.

I can't help but notice that Romantico does not post anything at all about the article detailing the Obama administration's ongoing endorsement/defense of anti-gay hate, but he gets really pissy about me for having posted the article detailing the actions.

Such priorities. Romantico is the one who'd be welcomed by the Tea Party. They're already running the Justice Department, it seems.

I had to be sure. I have said before, I am also frustrated with him. So we are clear,we both agree McCain and Palin would have been far worse. As for criticizing Obama, do a search. I've criticized him plenty of times. We both agree,it just seems like you are more cynical than I am.

There's little cause to be anything other than cynical at this stage.
