I loved Maggie in Gossford Park, and that film has grown on me with each viewing.
I really hope she's doing well.
She has brought so much to so many for so long. I just love her. (But then - who doesn't?) One of my favorites of her characters was Caro Eliza Bennett in Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. She was a tough talking old broad who hauled her tank of oxygen around with her while constantly smoking. I can't imagine anyone playing that character better.
All my prayers and best wishes are going her way.
I didn't realize she was in a production of Private Lives, that's one of my favroite works of drama ever written. I bet she was an amazing Amanda
My favorite Dame Maggie moment was in the TV adaptation of DAVID COPPERFIELD, in which she played "Betsey Trottwood". In the scene where the Murdstones are leaving her house (after being told by Miss Trottwood that they were cruel people, tormenting David's mother to her death), Miss Trottwood's parting shot to Jane Murdstone (the wonderful Zoe Wanamaker) is this:
(Calmly, almost as an aside): "Madam, if I see you riding a donkey across my green again, I'll knock your bonnet off...
(pointedly) ...and TREAD UPON IT!"
How could I forget EVIL UNDER THE SUN?
The Private Lives co-starred her husband Robeet Stephens as Elyot.
When Amanda first sees Elyot on the adjoining balcony, Maggie did a flawlessly executed triple take, with the classic lingering stare in the middle (as good as any by Buster Keaton), after which she scrambled halfway up the balcony trellis in shock.
I will never forget the sight of her hanging there, as the audience continued to laugh, as if that was exactly what ANYONE would do upon seeing one's ex on the adjoining balcony on one's honeymoon.
