And that's in 1970 dollars!!
Where did you get that information, IMDB? It's not true (a lot of the stuff there is not accurate). There's a very compelling story about it. Somebody just needs to write it. All about changes in studio heads and creative accounting to hide drug money over at Paramount Pictures. Did you know that DARLING LILI set one box office record, then broke it's own record at Radio City Music Hall? The record stands, today! It is the most successful film to ever play there. The film was never even released in most American cities, because Paramount wanted it to bomb. They needed to write something off, and DL didn't fit into the new studio heads idea of what he wanted the studio to release. The film made just over 8 million in 1970 dollars, in a release of only 12 cities, with absolutely no advertising. Although Paramount claimed that it spent $15 million on advertising. A ridiculous amount for 1970 (hell, even today!), yet it's in their books. If you get access to their records (you can, I did), it's all there. Of course, it was all exposed, but didn't change the reported history of DARLING LILI. It did nothing to sink Paramount, because it wasn't true. Bob Evans had a lot to answer for, though, when the truth came out.
i'd like to see it again. i'd like to hear all those great standards that DIDN'T make it onto the soundtrack recording oh so many years ago.
