Anyone else having problems with Deepdiscount? I've been having a lot of trouble with them lately. Their shipping seems to be taking longer than ever. I've always used the free shipping option, and have always gotten my purchases within 5 business days or so. Over the past 6 months that 5 days has become 10 business days and even longer.
I've always been a satisfied customer of theirs, but it has really gotten out of hand. Can anyone recommend any other online DVD retailers?

The free shipping does take forever, especially if you don't live in a major city.
I really do think it's about the cheapest option, though overstock does beat the prices occasionally and they often offer free shipping.

Well, the problem started when DeepDiscount.com was purchased by rival Amazon.
Yep, Amazon owns 'em BOTH.
So, what has happened since?
You have longer ship times.
You have HIGHER prices on pre-orders than Amazon. It's as if Amazon is keeping them afloat, but not letting them take the lead away... which they were clearly on the path to doing a couple of years ago.
"If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em out!" I always say.
Oh, and those twice-a-year site-wide sales? GONE. At least the one that should have happened in April didn't. And it's June now. The last one was November of '07.
Amazon.
Gotta love 'em.
But... I still look to DeepDiscount for their "theme sales." Like "All Warner TV 51% Off" or "Sony Classics" or something. But you have to dig for them. Good sales though.
Oh... and recently they added horrible SOUND BITES of country singers and the like telling me "HOWDY, THIS IS (fill in the blank), AND WELCOME TO DEEP DISCOUNT, Y'ALL!" Made me click away in fear, every time I heard it. I think they finally turned it off a few days ago. Thank GOD.

I’ve not seen anything official yet, but internet gossip is the 20% off sale starts this Friday and runs through the 22nd (it does seem late, but last year’s “Spring” sale was actually in June).

That's incredibly interesting besty.
I have noticed that amazon has been having trouble getting their stock in on release day recently. Also, I pay for that prime membership which gives free 2 day shipping, and lately it's been closer to 3-4.

Well, maybe it's the postal service then? Or is it just an Amazon/DeepDiscount thing?
And NCGuy---That would be terrific if they have their sale, even a tad late! I'll take it.
Just like I'll take the free shipping even if it's later these days too.
But DVD prices in general have gone up this past year. Everywhere. They didn't sell as much product in '07, with the first fiscal decline in DVD sales since their invention. So, what do they do? Jack the prices! Still I'm a die-hard fan... and I love those sales.

Posted: 6/3/08 at 7:57pmDD DVD always had the best prices. I didn't know about the Amazon takeover but it explains a lot. Now before purchasing a DVD I check the prices on both sites. A lot of times the Amazon price has been less.

Exactly, Mamie. I check them both as well. And more often than not, I find that Amazon has lower prices on pre-orders. Their price jumps up after the street date, but early on, it's lower that DeepDiscount. After street date, it's higher. DeepDiscount is usually stays in the middle and doesn't jump.
I hope they have that big sale this month!

I would get that too, except I already have the first 3 seasons (which were the best). But if I didn't own that set, I'd be ordering the full one!
I'm actually ordering the BD set of Harry Potter! I worked on the DVDs, but they just repurposed what I did for BD. I didn't get any copies, because I didn't do any new work.
I have to fork out actual cash for the set now, but the entire box of 5 movies on BD is something like $80 with the double discount.
I'm also getting a few more Criterions: Fanny & Alexander, Last Emperor.
Ratatouille on BD.
The Esther Williams box set!
One or two other things. That's crazy enough for me, this time.

best12bars, it looks like The Last Emperor is one of the films Criterion is releasing in its first batch of Blu-ray titles this fall.
Thanks for posting the coupon code. I’m going to spend this evening whittling down the list I started three months ago in anticipation of this sale!
Criterion Blu-ray Titles

See, here's my dilemma (and others too I'm guessing). Some films I'll wait for, some I'll double-dip (only a few) and others I'll be perfectly happy to just have it on regular DVD. Also, I don't have Blu-ray players everywhere, so if I want to watch a movie on anything other than my big fat TV in the living room... I need to get a regular DVD.
And I'm being "slow" with my BD buying for now. Only a few titles. I haven't made a full switch yet... and honestly, I'm not sure how far to go with it.

I'm getting Planet Earth on blu-ray. The price has come down since it was first released and now 20 percent off :)

Posted: 6/6/08 at 12:41pmhow long does this sale last?
#21re: DeepDiscountDVD
Posted: 6/6/08 at 12:52pm
Through June 22, according to dvdtalk.com.
Keep in mind you can only order once. If you try to apply the discount code from the same email account a second time, it won't go through.
And be sure to apply the code at the very end of adding stuff to your shopping cart! Otherwise it comes through at the regular price. So make sure and do the code thingy at the end right before you check out.

I can wait a bit then....think it's going to be:
Best Picture Collection--the only way I know to get SUNRISE
Beales of Grey Gardens
The Tin Drum
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Reno 911!
and maybe Strait-Jacket

lildogs---I did the same thing a year ago! I HAD to have Sunrise, so I bought the set when I found it on sale. I got it cheap, even though I already had a couple of the titles in it.
So, I gave my second copies of All About Eve and How Green Was My Valley away as gifts.
And I got Sunrise!
And it was SO worth it. That movie is a masterpiece.
