How does it work? I know the states hold primary's to elect the Dem. nominee, but can the DNC appoint who they want? Is it the electoral college, or popular vote? I've never voted for the primary before, but will deff. be voting next year. Just curious how the voting work's. Thanks.

Different states have different rules- in all cases however, the states each select delegates to the national convention which will be held in the summer of 2008. Sometimes you vote directly for delegates, sometimes the state picks the delegates committed to the candidate who gets the most votes in the primary.
In either case, delegates are usually committed to vote for a particular candidate in the first round of voting. They do a big roll call and each state casts it's votes. If no nomineee gets a majority, then they debate a while and vote again (This is pretty rare, lately- usually a candidate has enough committed delgates going in to the convention).
The convention is very exciting to watch- all the big democrats will give speeches and they will hammer out the party's position on all the issues (That's called the PLATFORM). Then they select a president, and the candidate selects his (or her!) running mate. The VP is quickly confirmed and then they both give speeches!
There are all sorts of sideline activities too- like Ann Coutler getting fired from her job at USA Today cause she called it the "Spawn of Satan" convention and said all the women there were "Fat, hairy legged pie wagons." It's the mot fun a human can have.

Yep- I am a political junkie- There are some incredible moments in the history of DNC conventions. I have no idea if these speeches are available online but look for:
1) Barbara Jordan's Keynote speech
2) Ann Richards speech
3) Bill Clinton's 2000 Speech.
All very moving.

Posted: 8/6/07 at 6:11pmThe longer the Bush administration stay's in office the more political I'm becoming. I'll look for the speeches, if not the next time I'm in Little Rock (family) I'll go to the Clinton Library. They should have his speeches.

Posted: 8/6/07 at 6:52pmWell if you are indeed from Ohio- you should get involved! The last two elections hinged on Ohio. Make sure everyone you know is registered and gets out and votes!

Posted: 8/6/07 at 7:25pmI do live in Ohio now, but not in 04'. I was part of the big blue sweep in the last state and senate elections 06'. Our Sec. of State (Dem) just got voted in on changing the voting system. I personally believe Kerry won Ohio, but Taft and Blackwell fixed that. They are not in office anymore. Thank god.
