There was an interesting table in todays New York Times Magazine about certain issues. I will put the numbers from the table on here, because I think it's really interesting.

MORALITY GAB

Abortion
Democrats 49% 44%
Republicans 27% 61%

Buying clothes made of animal fur
Democrats 58% 39%
Republicans 73% 21%

Death penalty
Democrats 53% 40%
Republicans 77% 19%

Homosexual behavior
Democrats 50% 46%
Republicans 27% 68%

Wow, I guess I really am a true Democrat....

Democrats are more split on this stuff than one might expect. It just goes to show how far right the entire political spectrum has moved.

According to this, I am far left of Democrat. I too was surprised at how split the Dems were on some of the items, particularly abortion.

Well, I think it's very possible to disagree with a "moral" issue while being open to allowing it in our country.
I am not necessarily a gigantic fan of abortion but I acknowledge a person's right to choose.
Therefore, I support Roe v. Wade.

Oh, didn't notice the "morality" gab part of the poll. In that case, I'm surprised so many Dems support the use of fur. I personally think it's disgusting. I hate when I get on the subway and someone else gets on right next to me in a fur coat. I'm sure it's nice and warm and all, but just the fur touching me completely grosses me out.

I totally agree, Madame. It grosses me out. People that wear fur have no heart.

I fall into the far left on all those categories too. Is it just me or is there way more fur wearing in the city? It seems even on a warm day I see a thousand people in fur and get ticked off.

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

Question

To all those against fur, do you eat meat ? If so, how can you eat me & yet be anti fur ? I would really like to know

for some reason fur would not work in Palm Springs...at least not in the summer.

I've never understood the attraction to fur, unless it's on a mans chest.......

Does not answer the question.

To be against fur & be a veggie, I can understand that. To be anti fur & eat meat or say it looks "tacky" does not compute

There's a difference between killing an animal to eat and killing an animal expressly for its skin (like a seal or a rabbit). They're not exactly having rabbit farms out there that sell rabbit meat after they skin them for their furs.

Your arguement is specious Mr Roxy, the things are not comparable. Yet my answer is yes, I am anti fur and also do not eat meat.

I eat meat and I refuse to take crap for it. I'm perfectly happy to let my vegan and vegetarian friends do their thing if they'll let me do mine. I don't like fur because I think it's ugly and I don't have a particular desire to wear it. I do wear leather, though, so I guess I can't be against the principal, but there's no saying I've got to like everything that goes with that.

To those who say eating meat is different:

My father drove a truck for a living. He delivered to slaughterhouses & saw how meat comes to your table (kosher & not kosher) & it ain't pretty. He told me he always remembered the screams of the animals.

If I truly was concerned about animals I would not eat meat or wear leather shoes or leather jackets etc. How you can be worried about animals for fur but eat meat or wear leather escapes me.You could also bring other hot button issues into it.

If you are anti fur great but don't try & force your anti fur views on others & I will not force any of my views on others on anything

We didn't try and force anything on anyone. You were the one that intuited that, defensive even (which is understandable given your history). We said it was disgusting, tacky, etc. We didn't say all fur wearers should die and should be outlawed or something ridiculous like that.

Also, there are cultural mores. Eating a hamburger is acceptable in the US generally. Wearing fur is a little less so. Also, not liking fur doesn't necessarily have to do w/ animal rights (although they are important also), it just means that we think wearing a dead thing on you and having it touch others is gross. Things aren't as black and white as you hate fur and therefore you must hate beef, otherwise you're hypocritical. There are other factors involved.

I believe like the Native Americans that all parts of an animal should be used. This would explain why I have no trouble eating meat and wearing leather, etc.

However, any animal that is only killed for its fur is wrong. If you eat the rabbit, then use its fur. But, if you are going to throw away the meat, your use of the fur is greedy and selfish.

Mr Roxy: I understand what you're saying, and it's partly true. However, no one was pushing any views on you at all.

Being someone that's against fur, I do not eat meat. I also don't wear leather of any kind. I only use cosmetics (lotions, hair gel) and toiletries (deodorant, cologne, mouthwash, toothpaste, etc.) that isn't tested on animals. So, nothing I use in my life has ever harmed an animal. I live a guilt-free life, and I feel better because of it.

Munk

I diasgree with your views re meat but I respect you for staying away from animals totally. Just think where we would be if no animal was ever killed for food. The planet would be overrun with them

Anyway, I tip my hat to you

Two words that will prevent the disastrous destruction of this world by animals in a meat-free society, Mr. Roxy: roadkill.
