Looks like it may happen this time
If it happens shows like Chitty, Fiddler & Charity will not reopen . It would not pay them to do so
The TWU wants idiotic things like more benefits for those who have retired to Florida & want the MTA to pad the payroll to make it easier for their members to take more time off. Nice salaries ,astronomical benefits, free medical until the day you die & than it gets passed on to their spouse & less work. Where do I sign up ? Ask them to make realistic sacrifices & they say no way. No wonder they do not want an impartial arbitrator
If it lasts a week or more the economic damage will be quite bad & it will take awhile to recover. Those who lose pay should take the union to small claims court & those businesses that can prove monetary losses should sue them also. The MTA handled it badly but monetarily they will be hurting because of these benefits in the coming years. They realize they never should have given free medical especially after you retire & now they are taking a stand. If they give in the fare could be $ 3 in a few years with no end in sight to repeated fare increases. This might also speed the exit of companies thinking of relocating out of NYC & more shows may be casualties
It ain't gonna be pretty. Fasten your seatbelts etc
Bump up for discussion today as the deadline gets closer
Nice to see they " may " resume talks today. One would think with the seriousness of the situation they would be locked in a room until they agree. The TWU refuses to face workplace reality & I fear there will be a strike with disastarous consequences. This is a colossal game of chicken with the citizens of NYC being held hostage. It is like a bad greek tradegy rerun every 3 years. Kind of reminds me of the old Twilight Zone episode where the guy has the same dream night after night
