Here's something I don't understand. How can some actors that are nominated for Oscars be disappointed when the presenter opens that envelope and says the winner's name. I mean usually, each nominee is up for a billion other awards that season, and for example, in 2012, Octavia Spencer took home the Oscar for supporting actress for The Help if you look at the other nominees' faces when they announce Spencer's name, they look disappointed, but are they not aware that they hadn't a hope in hell of winning, I mean she took home every other award ... The Oscar voters are hardly going to just turn the tables dramatically and give it to Melissa McCarthy or someone. I just don't understand how actors who are nominated for all these awards in this day and age can be both surprised/disappointed (whichever depending on the outcome) when they've gone to hundreds of other awards ceremonies throughout the year and the one person wins every time (most times!) - e.g. Anne Hathaway and indeed Daniel Day Lewis this year. It's just amusing how they still don't comprehend that they're not going to win if they haven't won anything up to that Oscar point!! I guess it was different in the old days when there weren't as many awards shows/ceremonies around... Plus you can't tell if they're happy or disappointed on the older telecast clips because they all have deadpan faces and smoky dead eyes.

Anyway I just thought it was amusing and interesting!

I just watched Octavia's Oscar win again on Youtube just now, and none of her other nominee's look disappointed at all.

Lauren Bacall was the odd's on favorite to win Best Supporting Actress from "The Mirror Has Two Faces," but was beat out by Juliet B from "The English Patient." You just never know who is ultimately going to win.

There always is a glimmer of a chance.

Let's look at 2000, for example. Kate Hudson won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Almost Famous, won several other awards for it, and was nominated for a SAG. The SAG that year went to Judi Dench for Chocolat. Between the two, who was a lock for the Oscar?... Not so fast, though, since Marcia Gay Harden won the Oscar that year for Pollock and was not even nominated for a Golden Globe or a SAG.

Great example, Wynbish. You just never know.

The Oscar is a crazy wiseguy of an award, anyways. Alfred Hitchcock, a prolific director of classics, has a Knighthood and only an honorary Oscar. Gary Oldman has the same number of nominations as Jonah Hill (just 1). Still, it's the highest honor of movie acting, really screen acting in general, and follows you forever. How much more prevalent is "Academy Award Winner" than "Academy Award Nominee" in movie trailers? A little disappointment is fine, in my book.

If you thought the other nominees looked disappointed when Octavia Spencer won an Oscar you should have seen MY face.

I think it was Julie Andrews who said that her favorite time being a nominee was for Victor/Victoria meaning she KNEW there wasn't a chance in hell she would win, meaning she could just go and have a great time.

I think there's always a chance - you just never know - and that could lead to dissapointment...

However - there are nominees who adore it when someone else wins...

Such as Ms. Streep jumping out of her seat screaming when her buddy Cher won..

The year Adrian Brody won - Nominees Nicholson and Cage and Caine were on their feet - overjoyed...
