Dixie vs Detroit...It's on!!!

Washington -- Four governors strongly defended Toyota Motor Corp.'s safety record and suggested the Obama administration has a "conflict of interest" because of its majority stake in General Motors Co.

The letter, from Kentucky Gov. Steven Beshear, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, was the first public defense of the Japanese automaker from prominent U.S. politicians after a series of recalls of 9 million vehicles worldwide.

Note: This plays right into the sweet spot of Lansing mayor and MI gubernatorial hopeful Virg Bernero. He should get a bump out of this if he plays his cards right. This strengthens my case that the next POTUS will hail from either Dixie or the Rust Belt. Lines have been drawn in the sand.

The rest after the jump.

Stupid move by those governors. Not only will they piss off everyone who has had trouble with their Toyota but also everyone else who sees Toyota through clear eyes.

They'll also get dismantled by the facts of science if it comes to that.

How about getting on Toyota's CEO for not only making his product look bad in the way he acted initially about the brake issue? This is the guy you gave subsidies, among other sacrifices, to come into your state for business?

"They'll also get dismantled by the facts of science if it comes to that."

When they're dismantled by facts, they simply reinvent them ,e.g. Sean Hannity trying to explain climate change yesterday. Seriously, Yawper, those good ole boys are exploiting the non-union status of their states to continue picking at the carcass of the Rust Belt, in spite of any public safety concerns.

I accept that the economies of first world nations are intertwined but we have to make something in this country other than salon products & bad movies to keep folks employed. To me, a network of regional passenger bullet trains is a more pressing need than national broadband.

It's really a strange action they've taken - a combo of Japanese and US culture that doesn't mesh. It sounds as if they feel threatened.

The neocons always sell the GOP to the highest bidder. They're placating Toyota so that the company doesn't decide to pull up stakes and relocate to a cheaper labor den while it recovers. The stock price is plummeting and some lawyers are now trying to shakedown the company on behalf of a purportedly aggrieved class of shareholders.

More after the jump.

What's the difference between a 'shakedown' and a legitimate grievance?
#8

Dixie vs Detroit...It's on!!!

Whenever TX lawyers represent a class of stockholders, the GOP calls it a addressing a "legitimate grievance". In contrast, whenever NY lawyers (or John Edwards) represents a class of folks who've suffered personal injury or other loss in a product liability case, the GOP refers to it as a "shakedown". I'm simply borrowing a page from the GOP playbook, Yawper.

To neocons, the rights of fictitious persons called corporations and their shareholders trump all others.

I would not quite say that the stock price is plummeting.

Its year-year low is 56.79, and the high is 91.97. It currently sits at 76.00. I honestly thought it would correct far more than it has with all of the recall news.

"I would not quite say that the stock price is plummeting."

I stand corrected. It's a bit premature to call it. There are reports of concerns that the price could drop to $60 in the near term, but those accounts are speculative at best still.

I'm hardly going to throw a pity party for Toyota but the company is caught in crossfire. From one end there's a massive recall (and bad weather) which could affect this quarter's sales and from the other, the first of what could be a series of class action suits from affected stockholders (and dealers) who feel duped.

I don't have much sympathy for Toyota - they managed the situation terribly, and from what I have read, there were issues and warnings about the accelerators going as far back as 2003. Apparently, State Farm also notified the feds of the problems, but nothing was done. I have read that this is really a software problem, and they kept trying to couch it as something else - so I think they have been disingenuous. The reputational hit is as big, or bigger than the litigation risk (in my opinion only).

Honda also has a huge recall now because of issues with airbags.

The only "winner" in this mess may be Ford, especially if its new models are recall-free for a bit.

Someone just pointed out to me that incumbent GOP Senators in AL & MS have midterm elections this year; a GOP Senator from KY is retiring this year; and a former GOP Senator from IN announced just yesterday that he'd be coming out of retirement to challenge incumbent Dem, gasp...Evan Bayh.

This has to be a coordinated effort. We should never forget that MS governor Haley Barbour is the current Chair of the Republican Governor's Association and that the vice-chair is MN Governor Tim Pawlenty. A Barbour-Pawlenty GOP ticket in 2012 would pose problems for Obama-Biden.

Despite everything, including all the past years of Toyota hype, GM is still the top seller in the US. They'll be making money hand over fist again in short order.
#14

Dixie vs Detroit...It's on!!!

Fair enough. I think that GM is still under a bit of a cloud from its bailout. But it too is making much better cars. The Impala and the Malibu are good cars and are selling well and compete directly with Toyota and Honda. If the Volt is ever released and lives up to its hype, it would be great for GM.

I think Ford is in a better position right now to exploit the opportunity, but GM could also do so.
#15

Dixie vs Detroit...It's on!!!

Oh, the Volt is definitely being released. The pre-production models (i.e. assembly-line test models) are scheduled to come off in March and first unit date is (unofficially) expected to be in November. The engine plant for the Volt's on-board generator is currently being tooled and is slated to start running parts in July. The battery plant opened in January.

The Volt was one of the reasons I thought it was worth the investment to save GM (along with the concern that we need basic industrial capacity in the US). It could be a game-changer for the company. So far, Ford has been able to garner the eco-friendly market for US cars (not talking about where they are built, just the label). If the Volt lives up to the expectations, I think both GM and Ford could have much brighter prospects than recent pasts.

Sales weren't and aren't the problem at GM or Ford. The problem was legacy costs and debt load.

The bulk of the losses GM was reporting weren't even from the auto operations but rather from GMAC's involvement in the mortgage market. Even now GMAC is making money on the auto finance side but is losing on the mortgage side.

Funny, the same thing was true at AIG. It was not traditional insurance business that got them in trouble, it was the Credit Default Swaps and the investment side that failed. Their traditional business of core life insurance and annuities was profitable.
