This morning I paid a visit to a local lab to have some blood drawn. I have a standing order for these tests on file there. The young woman behind the desk said to me, " Your lab order ranned out. I have to call your doctor to axe him to fax another one to us so we can drawed your blood." My blood pressure hit an all time high.

Thats why I avoid talking to people... Another proper english thing that gets to me is when people mess up "good" and "well." It drives me INSANE!

Am I cut out to spend my time this way?

and while you probably didn't intend it Yenta (and you know I love you).....your post makes it quite clear the person was african-american, and could be taken in ways you didn't intend it to be.

I cannot fault someone for how they learned english. While it is a shame that she can't speak english well, she's probably a product of whatever education system she grew-up in......and she probably thinks she is saying the correct things.

I worked with a woman for years who would say liberry and liberian instead of library and librarian. It drove me nuts, until I realized that was how she was taught to say those words

Elphaba: I was not implying anything racial. But to me, this was awful. I have respect for my language and I believe others should as well. This woman's use of language was also a poor reflection on the company. We communicate with this language and I feel it is essential that we all respect it and use it properly.

Sounds awful.

I'm one to go insane when I hear the word "hopefully" misused.

I was thinking what Elphaba wrote. But didn't want to say it.

Isn't this what led to Raggy's downfall?

yenta, I know you weren't implying that......I was only saying that it might be taken differently. And I agree people should know their own language, but....if you are taught something over and over, how do you know it's wrong? Yes, the company should perhaps try to help with this.....but the real problem here is the school system she came out of.

No, BSo, Raggy's thread was a racist diatribe about who people in America must speak English and no other languages.

I could go on a great length about my students. Their English is horrid and they don't want to improve. (BTW: I graded a book report this morning on a NOVEL called JULIUS CAESAR, written by someone called "Folger Shakespeare")

Instead, let me focus on the local radio personalities who use phrases like "Don't we gotta go to the news?", "How cool is that?", "Him and I", "I immediately knew it was her", --and the ever- annoying phrase "amazing".

Today, the bubble brained female talked about wanting to see the movie TRISTAN AND EYESOLD this weekend.

Dammit, these people get paid good money to talk on the radio. Learn correct grammar and pronunciation!!!!!

"Folger Shakespeare"???? Easy: The paperback editions we use in class are from the "Folger Shakespeare Library".

What really irks me about this incident is that the kid was doing a book report on something we read in class. Geeze! I'm getting too old to teach!

The woamn at the lab appeared to be quite young and perhaps in her early 20's. How did she ever graduate high school? I realize this is Hartford and she more than likely went to an inner city school. However, I hear the same poor usage coming out of the moths of the kids neighboring town of West Hartford which is rather affluent. Rich or poor..it dosen't seem to matter.

I was just telling this story to two off my black coworkers today.
I got on the subway at Yankee Staudium once and sat down next to two young black guys who were dropping the "n" word and talking "motherf**ker this and motherf**ker that" Two stops later one of the young men exited to series of intricate handshakes.

The remaining young man turns to me,smiles and says in perfect Oxford, Cambridge English " So, How was the game"?

'Take me out tonight where's there's music and there's people and they're young and alive.'
