Posted: 1/2/06 at 11:17pmBecause I really want to continue doing theater in college but I don't think a double major would work out.

Posted: 1/2/06 at 11:28pmdepends where you go. I know a lot of places where you don't. but show up at auditions and ask them. you never know.

Posted: 1/2/06 at 11:37pmyou might be more likely to get a role if the casting person is one of your teachers.

Posted: 1/2/06 at 11:39pmditto-ing the "it depends"...at my school you don't have to be an acting major, but you DO have to be in the department...so anyone who is an acting, design/tech, puppetry or drama BA major can audition.

Posted: 1/2/06 at 11:57pmMy school produces 1 or 2 theater majors a year, so it's really "anything goes" as far as casting. Just make this a factor when choosing your college.

Posted: 1/3/06 at 1:00amI think at (some) bigger schools or schools with conservatories, you might have to be a major. At smaller schools, you don't. It never hurts if you are a theater major though.

Posted: 1/3/06 at 2:15amI recently directed a production at a University in Michigan and maybe half of the cast were majors, the rest just auditioned and got in.

Posted: 1/3/06 at 2:21amMy school, I'm pretty sure you have to be in the theater program. But there are also separate drama programs for non-majors and they put on their own productions every year and they don't have to deal with the casting competition.

Posted: 1/3/06 at 4:27amYeah, usually even if you have to be a theater major to be in school/department-sponsored productions, there are student-run organizations that put on their own shows. We have one that produces a play every fall and a musical every spring. So all chance of doing theater isn't lost even if you aren't majoring in it.
