Okay, Glebb, the title of this thread brought me out of lurking mode. HA!! You really come up with some brilliant threads -- or at least 100% original!!
Um, Miss Blyth was actually an all right performer (in the few films of hers that I've seen) with a pretty amazing voice. M-G-M's replacement for the exited Jane Powell (I believe).
Listen to her and Vic Damove duet "Stranger In Paradise" from Kismet. It's all there. She was an okay actress (minus a few laughably horrible moments in Rose Marie) but she really came too late to the M-G-M musical. Much like Delores Grey. Just joined to party at its sad commencement. But don't discount Ann Blyth -- after years of having ear-aches listening to Kathryn Grayson, its nice M-G-M cane up with a soprano less taxing on the ears.
*edit* Oh, and I don't have preference between those two roles you mentioned. :)

Even though she does not utter a sound as the Mermaid?
Brilliant or at least 100%. I accept! :)

I love Ann Blyth in The Helen Morgan Story, especially because of the surreal replacement of herentirely appropriate operetta-like voice, which sounded liked the actual voice of Helen Morgan, with the inappropriate belting voice of Gogi Grant, which was somehow completely fabulous. (And a yummy young Paul Newman plays the guy-who-done-her-wrong.)
Ann Blyth's star-hits-the-bottom performance is a camp classic that set the stage for Patty Duke's Neely O'Hara.
We love Ann.
