Posted: 3/30/07 at 6:01pmIt's the International Phonetic Alphabet. And even thought I studied it for a year and a semester, I never quiet got the hang of it. I've always been better learning dialects by ear, rather than on a page. The whole thing is really hard. But if you have a specific question Gclef, I can attempt to help.

I studied it at NYU. I still can't pronounce it all properly.
But I can impress my friends with the knowledge of a different alphabet.

yep---I had a whole year of it. The first semester was learning how to apply it to English, then Italian and German, then the whole second semester was spent on French. Gotta love diction classes!
Actually, I do still use a lot of IPA when I'm marking German diction for Bach Choir, so it's not completely useless!
