Do you download music?

If so, do you do it legally from iTunes? Or illegally? Do you feel guilty about stealing someone's music, or do you see no harm?

re: Do you download music?

I used to steal but i have stopped. I didn't mind if it was from big groups who make millions but i would never steal from an small indie band.
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!

re: Do you download music?

ive definitely downloaded music, but i also have most of the same music on store bought CDs so i dont feel that guilty, I just happen to like mixing up the music randomly when im working at my comp and my CD player doesnt hold that many CDs. sometimes I just rip em off the CD instead of downloading too, but some cds are written to prevent you from doing that. when i own a 50 something cd changer, ill probably stop.

re: Do you download music?

I love these people who fancy themselves Robin Hood. "I only steal from rich greedy record companies" and blah blah blah. You know what? That's bull****. Stealing is stealing, no matter who you're stealing from. Do record companies mark up their products way too much? Yeah, they do. Welcome to corporate America, kids. Almost everything else you buy is overpriced, too. That doesn't justify shoplifting.
#8

re: Do you download music?

I agree, Plum. And 'I never woulda bought that song, anyway...' doesn't justify it either.
#9

re: Do you download music?

No, it doesn't. But as Ben Franklin said, the lovely thing about being a rational person is that you can rationalize anything. You'd be surprised how much bad behavior is really all about money.

re: Do you download music?

sure it does. i don't like paying for music. i buy maybe half of my cds, and the rest i d/l illegaly. not everything that is illegal is inherently wrong. sometimes i buy cds off amazon used, burn them, then sell the original back for the same price i bought it at. that part's not illegal. i don't really care if limeware and the rest are, you know, forbidden. so what? maybe that's not politically correct, maybe i'm not taking the moral highground. it introduces me to music i wouldn't otherwise listen to b/c i don't wanna actually buy an album. i just want to see if i like it. i just don't see how it's wrong. i'm convinced about 98% of you think i'm retarded, so, i don't really have anything to lose by taking the unpopular opinion here.

re: Do you download music?

How exactly is downloading music illegally any different from walking into a store and taking a shirt "just to see if you like it"? People worked to make that CD- artists, composers, technicians, and marketing people- and they need money in exchange for that work. You're denying them rightful compensation for their labor.
#12

re: Do you download music?

And, Plum, you're forgetting the part that we are paying to compensate for their illegal behavior.

As much as people attempt to rationalize and justify their bad behavior they know it's just not right. Don't people take pride in themselves anymore?

re: Do you download music?

and how is this, exactly? cds are *less* money than they were before the invention of p2p. record companies lowered the prices because peoples main reason for not buying albums is that they're overpriced. i remember when the norm was 18 bucks for a cd, back in the early 90's. gradually they went down, but they didn't hit the new norm ($12-$10)until the companies felt like they had to, for competition's sake. also, many cds are now "enhanced" or come with extra material (at the same price as regular albums) because they want you to buy it that badly. if anything, we're enhancing your cd-buying experience. you're paying less money and getting more.

have you ever seen the movie office space?

re: Do you download music?

you could always download it. just keeeeeding! okay well part of the plot, without using spoilers, is the concept of "stealing a little bit". only-kinda-stealing. he's trying to explain his scam to his girlfriend, and they exchange something like this...
peter: you know the tray at the 7-11?
joanna: the one for the crippled children?
peter: no, that's the jar! the tray, with the money for everybody.
joanna: oh, okay, yeah.
peter: well, what we're doing here is just taking fractions of those pennies. so see? it's not really stealing.

it goes something like that, and i view the p2p phenomenon as the 7-11 tray. but that's just morally-bankrupt me.

re: Do you download music?

Right.

Like I said, people use all kinds of fun rationalizations for what really amounts to greed. The fact that the record companies do it doesn't justify consumers doing it, too. But hey, I'm just the naive type, I guess.

re: Do you download music?

so, you're naive and i'm morally bankrupt- what a pair! they should make a musical about us.

plum: downloading music is sprouted from the seed
of greed
feinstein: i see
plum: it's really no different
than wynona ryder's shopping spree
feinstein: i conceed
plum: it's greed! you invent these
crazy explanations
for your activities,
what you need is damnation
feinstein: i'll give it contimplation
plum: your ipod should contain
only legally obtained material
we all feel the pain
when you're habbits turn serial
feinstein: that point's disagreeable
together: it's a question of morals
there's no truth only perspective
therefore there's no point in quarrls
the issue's entirely subjective
feinstein: so together we go-
plum: hmay i slap you with me hand?
feinstein: this is broadway world
together: a world that's hard to understand
feinstein: hard to understand
plum: understand
feinstein: a world that's hard to understand

re: Do you download music?

Write that in iambic pentameter and make it rhyme (oh, and win the debate, because Plum makes a very good point) I'll be impressed. re: Do you download music?

re: Do you download music?

well, the 7-11 theory is my main defense. everyone's gonna take plums side because it "sounds" good, and also she has more friends here. but i'd be genuinely surprised if you all didn't really, in your darkest hours, ever tape a song off the radio or download something illegally. i'm not saying it's always the "right" thing to do, i'm only trying to be honest. i download music, and i don't feel bad about it. there's no way i'm the only one here.

and it DID rhyme.

re: Do you download music?

I liked it!! And so on the spot! In fact, it made my whole night--err morning..

I agree that by just downloading any old music you want that you are not supporting an artist. But then why are cd burners and such sold legally?

re: Do you download music?

I'm not going to pretend like I've never downloaded anything illegally, or that I felt badly about it. But at the same time, it doesn't make it any less illegal, or any less wrong.

And it did rhyme for the first 3/4 (somewhat), but then you got lazy and used "understand" for the last 4 lines. re: Do you download music?

ETA: And there are many other purposes for a CD burner than just copying CDs or burning ones that you've downloaded online.

Hey! that was part of the whole repetition at the end of a song, ya know, when they get all slow and broadway-ish on the last note? *pats feinstein on back*

wow I need sleep ...goodnight!
