I'm not sure how you spell it, but if you live or have lived in the Winnetka burbs of Chicago...

How is it? Ever since I saw the movie HOME ALONE I always thought it looked like such a beautiful and wonderful place to live. Safe area? How far from the Chicago theatre district? Expensive? Good schools?

And on a side note, this is the most random thread I've created on BWW!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Winnetka is one of the many very beautiful, extrememly expensive "North Shore" suburbs. It is very quiet and lovely and the schools are excellent. The North Shore is socially progressive in it's own way, but charges of racism fly from time to time.

I have spent time working on the North Shore and I also have to say: some of the residents are the most agressively snobby, abusive demanding pigs I've ever seen. As a friend remarked about a lovely town near Winnetka "It's such a nice place, too bad it's the Hellmouth."

My sister lives in the next town north and I'll vouch for Joe's take on the place. Beautiful town to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Oh yeah Capn I forgot. INSANELY expensive across the board. It's an easy commute to Chicago, straight up the commuter train line which runs frequently- probably a 45-50 minute train trip.

Home prices are outrageous. I can't imagine a home for less than $500,000. Not much rental property.

I was thinking how to convey the pampered life of priviledge there. How about this: At the Grocery store there, when you are ready to check out, they have a 'traffic cop' who directs you to a register. Then there is a person who UNPACKS your cart onto the conveyor, a checker who rings you up and a bagger who puts your purchases back in a cart. You pay for your groceries and walk away without a look back. You pull your Land Rover up to the front door and they put your groceries in the back of your car. You can (and should) accomplish all this without interrupting your cell phone call or glancing at (or tipping) any of the 5 people involved in the transaction. And they follow this procedure even if you are just buying a six pack of Diet Coke.

Exactly, Joe!

In my sister's town the garbage cans are all kept in enclosures behind the houses. It is deemed to be the job of the lowly trash collectors to go behind each house and bring the cans out to the truck on the street and then put them back. Heaven forbid the elite homeowners dirty their hands by dragging the cans back and forth. My sister and her husband really objected to this practice, so they bring their cans out to the end of their driveway. The neighbors all objected and it caused quite a stir. They felt that she was setting "a bad precedent". She does it anyway, being careful to get the cans out no more than a half hour before pick up and moves them back immediately. She's such a lowlife.

I felt silly not carrying my 6 pack of diet coke out to my car. They would insist. I finally just started going to Walgreen's for my Diet Coke.

Actually Jack Benny was born in Chicago and raised in Waukegan, which a moderately sized city further north on Lake Michigan. It's not so far from Winnetka, but WORLDS away in income and atmosphere. Waukegan is not a nice place to live.
