Seemingly healthy people drop dead all of the time.
I had a friend who was just sitting there talking, then grabbed her head, saying, "Ouch" like she had a headache, and just keeled over, dead.
It happpens.

Sounds like you friend had an aneurysm. People can have an aneurysm for years without it being detected and then it'll burst one day. Death is pretty much instanteous.
I hadn't even considered the possibility of an aneurysm. With the age of the pilot my first thought was heart attack.
btw the plane touched down in Newark about 75 minutes ago.

Usually, I like the BBC. Sometimes, I love the BBC:
An aviation expert told the BBC it was "very rare" for pilots to die while at the controls on an airborne plane.
REALLY?!

Natural causes means it wasn't murder, suicide, or drug related. Nothing outside the body or "unnatural" caused the death.
If he had a terminal illness he would not be flying that plane. "What? You're in the last stages of cancer and could die at any time? Sure, you can fly a plane across an ocean!" Yeah, that's a lawsuit right there.
ETA: When someone dies of a terminal illness cause of death is usually listed as "complications related to cancer" or whatever it is.
