Can someone please tell me what's the difference on being an alto or mezzo soprano? Can an alto sing a mezzo soprano song or can a mezzo soprano sing a song for an alto? i am confused.

an alto sings lower than a mezzo. any one CAN sing anything. its what is comfortable in your voice.

It also has to do with the tonal quality of your voice, not necessarily your range (although that also plays a part). Example: Linda Eder is a mezzo belter but can still hit a top F above top c (which she does in her rendition of Man of la Mancha). That doesn't make her a sop though, as her vocal tonal quality is - mezzo.
