****MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT FINALE****
I rather wish Mary had ended up alone at the end of the series, I enjoy watching her character a lot, however Matthew Goode's character felt like such weak sauce compared to Matthew Crawley. Not Goode's fault. It was in effort to slap a bow on Mary's relationship situation for the sake of a relationship. The beauty in Matthew and Mary was he was truly the only one who loved her for who she was and was able to look past her icy exterior and saw her good parts, which I loved. Her son's legacy and future at Downton was already secure. I don't feel they needed to give her a romantic resolution.
Edith on the other hand had a remarkable journey and fitting ending. After always being the disappointment, she became more prominent and successful than her entire family. And unlike Mary she absolutely is deserving of love and gives that love in equal return.
My other quibbles of the ending: I wanted Thomas to have romance again. We got to see so little of it and only in the first episode, I was certain it was going to happen and it didn't. Also the Dowager had such a whimper of an ending to her story, nothing exciting or interesting, she was just there, and that made me sad.

Finale Spoilers
I think I pretty much agree with all of that. As I said, I like Goode, but the whole relationship felt very perfunctory. Edith's ending though did feel well deserved. And yeah, I know the times, etc, but I think it was disappointing how they failed to have Thomas have any other romantic relationships besides the one hook up in season 1 (and I suppose he had something of a weird romance--on his side--with the blind soldier who, of course, died...) Like I said I was satisfied with the finale, but the fact that it went out of its way to give nearly everyone a happy ending, and that Thomas' happy ending seemed to be that he could work for the rest of his life (or the next world war anyway) at Downton was pretty... blah.
**FINALE SPOILERS**
My wife and I both let out a breath we'd been holding as soon as the wedding was done. Then we laughed. We were both certain that SOMETHING was going to happen. Poor Edith. I was so happy for her. It wasn't perfect, but it was perfect enough for me. I was sad to see it go.
I am so glad they did not kill off the gay under butler.
