Nice coinage.

I like AI, I'll own up, but I hate the music they use, mostly. I haven't touched a radio in years. Most mainstream music makes me want to rip my eyes out, and does nothing for me. So it makes me really happy that these guys are getting recognition, but it's also unnerving to be affected like that by music that's not... well, from a musical; for me, anyway. It makes me kind of nervous and uncomfortable, and I don't know why, because I like their music.

All of those things are good things though. Visceral. Nervous. Uncomfortable. Likable.

Maybe you have to come from punk rock like me to realize that each of those things is good on its own, but when simultaneous, totally powerful.

Given how theatrical the Dresden Dolls are, that's why I said at the beginning of the thread that I wished more of the young'uns around here would check them out, because they are so good and so not like the processed cheez whiz that seems to get so much attention in our culture.

Cheez Whiz freaks me out -- literal and metaphorical.

Yay for the Dresden Dolls.

I think I'll pick up the CD, next time I'm around a Barnes and Noble or something. I'm tempted to get it on iTunes, but... bleh.

The packaging's pretty great on the actual cd.

If you click on the link, I believe you can get it for under 13 bucks, including shipping.

You'll have a wicked good time at Newbury Comics. They sold my punk rock fanzine back in 19 er, back in the 1900s. The clerk was a waifish gal with an odd little pony tail. And that clerk's name was Aimee Mann.

Anyone who's interested in the Dresden Dolls would probably like Nine Inch Nails as well. From what I've heard of the Dolls, Nine Inch Nails is similiar in a lot of respects and equally as thought-provking, especially their masterpiece of The Downward Sprial.

NIN is a lot harder.

Though the Dolls certainly rock out, they're a piano and drums band, so they're definitely more on the cabaret end of the spectrum. Their emotional palette is more diverse than NIN's too.

Of course, Dresden Dolls opened for NIN on their last tour.

That's very true, although many fans of the Dresden Dolls tend to be NIN fans as well despite their musical differences (of course, a lot of that could be attributed to the tour).

Your comment about NIN's emotional palette (or lack thereof) had me laughing as well. It's one of the reasons why I find their music monotonous after a while. I view Reznor as a musical genius, but there's only so much one can take.

I totally agree.

Rage is fun, but even the Sex Pistols covered The Monkees.

NIN used to scare me, a LOT. Maybe I should give them another try, now that I'm not, you know, 12. I'm rarely one for anything too hardcore, though.

I love Pretty Hate Machine. But even the follow-up seemed played out when it was FINALLY released.

Hah, Namo. Exactly. I don't doubt that Reznor, at one point, was feeling depressed and his feelings of "I want to die and therefore will simulate coitus with my keyboard" were genuine, but there's a point where you've gotta give it up to some extent.

Em, my NIN fandom stems from an appreciation of Trent Reznor's innovative (well, at the time his albums were released) style and not because I truly identify with many of his songs. Perhaps approaching them from that angle would help you to become a fan -- it's hard to force oneself into a faux rageful mindset.

ETA: I enjoy the melodic aspect of PHM, but TDS, to me, is genius in both its concept and execution (although, yes, perhaps a bit played out even at that time). Updated On: 4/21/06 at 06:34 PM

What I can't stand is how Trent always does this, "Oh, between the last album and this new one, I totally descended into addiction and clearly wanted to die, but things couldn't be better now." EVERY time.
