"E-blasts" from BWW

when, in the since-edited "Penn & Teller" contest thread on Main messageboard, i asked Craig to distinguish between what i was callilng "spam" and he was calling "e-blasts." He answered in PM but then encouraged me to post here. So this is his reply:

an e-blast is something that is sent out by us. It sounds like you are getting something else - not sent out by us.

At the bottom of any of our eblasts is a way to opt out. You also, under "your settings" have the option to control which notification you do and do not want to receive.

i'm definitely learning a lot about how BWW is now edited. The editing of the Penn & Teller contest thread has been very revealing.

Why? Because they took down your nonsensical posts? They were doing us a favor by not putting us through the misery of having to read them.

I think a great service was done by removing them.

re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

now i know why MMS claims to be celebrities...so we won't know it's actually Craig.

(that's the way to provoke some thought without being insulting; for some people, that will be far from "nonsensical")

Because I find you annoying and a blow hard and I'm glad they took down your posts means I'm Craig? Oh TwoStep, sweet, misinformed TwoStep.

Lots of people think the exact same thing about you. All of us can't be Craig.

re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

just curious, MMS, did you think the edited post about this topic being better-served on the off-Topic board because it's been more interesting lately and more people read it was "non-sensical"?

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

sorry, could you clarify "exact same thing"? that i write "nonsensically"?

i guess claiming to be Ruben or Star is more logical.

And is my annoying blowhardiness why you send me PM's saying welcome back?

Or is the negative attention you get from alternately bashing and then trying to insinuate yourself with other posters just too addictive?

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

Here again, you know I love you, MMS. Mean it. And I'm sure Craig or Rob would be glad to again report the one name, one ID concept. Words I suspect they live by.
Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

Translation: i posted in the Main messageboard thread about the Penn & Teller contest (after Craig suggested that i was welcome to post what he termed "off-topic" replies about spam and e-blasts on this Board) that it might be better anyway since this one had been more interesting lately and probably more people were reading it anyway. Then that was edited out. MMS said my posts there were nonsensical, and i wondered if that was one of the ones MMS meant.

And for the record, i was joking when i suggested MMS was Craig. Craig is much more intelligent, if a little overzealous in editing.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

One ID = One person indeed.

TX - I am glad you have decided to not be argumentative about this.

As written on the thread in question

"This thread is about the contest. Not about email viruses, eblasts and user settings. Feel free to email/PM Rob or myself are begin a thread in the O/T section.

Thank you. "

TX - your post after that was deleted because it again took the thread off topic. It's not being an overzealous editor. It's called keeping to the guidelines.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

and Craig, i'm glad you're not being sensitive.

Deleted posts also pointed out that my opinion (which, again, to my knowledge was once welcome on either board, Main or Off-Topic) is that the way a contest is entered, and the issues thereof (like why some wanted to know the reasoning of it being done by e-mail) are still on-topic, because it's still "about the contest". Deleted replies suggested my theory that many viewers/posters might not enter that way for fear of spam (since posts indicated that the entries were shared with not just BWW). Are you inferring that if i started a thread on Main messageboard saying the Off-Topic Board seemed more interesting and widely read now, it would remain, as long as the subject was " Main messageboard versus Off-Topic Board"? Just because BWW policy is politely questioned, it doesn't make the query "off-topic." Informed debate is not necessarily argumentative.

And, MSS, thanks for the "sensical" reply. As usual, your reasoning is crystal clear. Crystal Carrington, that is.

And Craig, i did try to edit the first post in this thread to reflect where you encouraged me to start an off-topic thread (which you later copied here). But somehow it would never post, i kept getting a error message.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

TX

If you had created a topic about the main board v. the off topic board, it would have been moved over here. It's a simple concept. The main board is for theater discussion.

And most message boards do not "allow" discussions of their policies on the actual message board. We allow more than mosts in that regard so that people can benefit as to the method to the madness.

Every contest we have run has been via email entry - so this contest wasn't unique. I *believe* the focus of the question was more why the "comments" section was removed for the contest.

Entries are shared, personal information is not as per the privacy statement.

And one who makes a statement doesn't infer. That person implies. How that is interpreted is how it is inferred. Just FYI, since we are clarifying here...

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

Here's a question that really shouldn't take much thought. Can anyone think of any contest held solely online where an email address would NOT be required? One has the option of including an email address and complying with the rules or just not entering.
Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

i did ask why of all the articles on the main page, the contest one did seem fairly unique in not having a "comments" section, but instead sending it to the Main messageboard.

As to "other contests" i pointed out in PM to you that i meant e-contests requiring e-mail addresses in general, not those of BWW in particular. Infrequent viewers of this site, particularly given that the Main message thread indicates the entries are by e-mail because they are required by other entities besides BWW, might naturally INFER (thanks for the kind correction) that their entry might be used for a mailing list. Never in any post, PM or on either Board, did i IMPLY (sorry if my mistake early was distracting and not clarifying) that generating such mailing lists or even spam in general was a negative thing, but just something that gave viewers/posters/entrants some pause. In fact, that the recent "e-mail blasts" from BWW might inforce that INFERENCE (hope that i have it correctly now).

If it was read as critical of BWW, i apologize. If BWW chooses to see its operation, and subsequent policies, as not being "about theatre", that is their right. But we all come here primarily because of interest in theatre. So sometimes it seems as if for the sake of "clarity," decisions get a little arbitrary and maybe, sensitive.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: 'E-blasts' from BWW

Lots of contests have many ways of entering. On doing so, some offer options of notification. i don't think Web users can be blamed for being wary, given the sophistication of software these days.

As was pointed out by another poster, or perhaps Craig or Rob, every person posting here supposedly has a valid e-mail address. So entering a caption contest by simply posting here should be enough to get notified. Submitting an e-mail address might make some INFER that they are signing up for a mailing list of some sort (whether BWW or Penn & Teller's or some other sophisticated advertising agency's).
