I can spell, really. I just haven't been to bed yet. That's my cue.... G'night Y'all!!
Eddie Izzard is the funniest stand-up comedian on the planet. I had the privilege of seeing him earlier this year at the British Comedy Festival in the Village. He played a small, intimate room and was absolutely brilliant. Eddie hopped on stage way before anyone expected him to be announced, and was very cool and laid-back. And h-y-s-t-e-r-i-c-a-l-l-y funny!!
"Dear Paul (saint, apparently): Who the f&*% are you? What is this?? 'Never put socks in a toaster? Never put jam on a magnet?' Hey, whose idea was it to become pen-pals with St. Paul!? Love, The Corinthians: Steve Corinthian, Jeff Corinthian, etc."
My favorite executive transvestite. :)
Eddie Izzard=God!
He is my favorite comedian. His work is so intelligent and he keeps it fresh so that no matter when you see him, it always seems like the first time he's performing the material. I got my parents hooked on him as well. Second fav is Margaret Cho. I just watched Cho Revolution last night.

I do! SO much. I loved when my mom called me up not too long ago to tell me "that Lizard guy" is on Leno! LOL. I love Eddie IZZARD.

I used to love him. But it's all over now. I think he's bright and insightful and the world needs more out heterosexual transvestite performers IMHO.
But I saw him on the last tour (after having seen him previously as he was up-and-coming) and this time around the large theater was packed by fans so that every single utterance was met with WILD GUFFAWS and applause for even the meagerest of punchlines. Frankly, he's so big, he doesn't have to work very hard. I feel like he's big enough to coast now, and the audience is huge enough to laugh at every single line (even the unfunny ones) that it's practically cult-like.
And that's fine. Eddie doesn't need me anymore.
So do you think Eddie is coasting on the fans now, or that it is the fans who have diminished the experience?

I think it's a bit of both. I think there's no point in really pushing to the edge for groundbreaking comedy when the man got the first of many standing ovations just for walking out onstage. I mean, they laughed at almost EVERY pause. There were two adults in Harry Potter related clothing next to me in the theater who literally squealed and guffawed during every pause and clapped and "wooed" for each punchline.
It wasn't the honest laughter of an audience that is delighted. It was the rote responses of cult members to their leader. And that's fine. Just not for me.
I gotcha. I think the same has happened to Margaret Cho. With every show, her mugging gets longer and longer and the audience roars dutifully for every facial expression she makes whether it's the first or twentieth time we seen it in a single show. I found Cho Revolution to be her most tiresome performance. She does the black drag-queen voice so much, she has really lost what made her so fresh and original. It was really her perspective rather than her facial expressions and drag-queen persona that put her on the map. Now, the cult is so devoted, they'd scream nonstop if she just stood and made faces for an hour without uttering a word and give her a standing ovation.
