I am interested in Kent State University's summer theatre. Before I send this email to the Artistic Director, I would like you guys to read it and see if I should add anything or take anything away. Thanks!
Hello Ms. Kent,
First of all, I would like to introduce myself. My name is _________and I am a sophomore at ___________. I am an aspiring lighting designer and love theatre. Now that I am 16, I would love to start off professionally in your program. For the last couple of years, I have been seeing your shows with my Grandma's senior citizen group and have loved every one of them. It would be a dream come true to work with you and your company. I would learn so much to help me with my future career. I am looking for a job such as a spotlight operator or something associated with all three of the productions. If I am too young, working at the theatre collecting ticket stubs would put a smile on my face. I can email you my resume or email it to porthouse@kent.edu. Whatever you would prefer. Thank you and have a great week.
Sincerely,
___________
Use 'grandmother' instead of 'grandma' if you want to sound more formal. That's my suggestion.

I wouldn't send it to the Artistic Director. I would send it to either the Production Manager or Technical Director. If you don't know the person's name, begin the letter "Dear Sir or Madam" but address the envelope Production Manager c/o Kent State University.
I wouldn't mention Grandma, I would just say I saw the shows and enjoyed them.
I would drop the part about "I can send the resume". Instead write "Attached is a copy of my resume" and send your resume along with the letter.
You've told them what they can do for you, "get experience", but what can you do for them? You might want to say that you will work for free to gain experience.

I will work for free for experience, but the whole point of this is to get a summer job.

It needs to be more formal.. I gotta run, but I'll PM you later.
I second everything that GothamPC said.
The artistic director is generally not directly affiliated with theatre operations in technical manner that you are looking for. Hiring/Firing, etc. There's production manager or technical director that could get you in...
If you have a portfolio, offer that too.
Hey...hun. How about this. I see Terri (Ms. Kent) everyday for at least 5 hours a day. Do you want me to ask for you? I mean she basically could get you in. Let me know.
lmao! or you could ask mebice to have a chat with terri...that works too!
All of these connections... damn this is a very powerful group. We could take over the world.
I am not sure if that was sarcastic papa (I hope it wasn't
) But, I was just trying to help. Really not trying to get him in by my talking to Terri...but just finding out where he should send the letter. Just trying to help.
oh, please, no, mebice!!! i so totally did not mean it to be sarcastic at all. it was just that i was wracking my brain trying to think if i even knew anyone at kent anymore and when i couldn't i sent a pm with some ideas in it along with the webpage for porthouse with their available jobs for the 2004 season. then i came back and saw your message and it hit me how small the world was. especially the theatre community and i was just laughing that it would be just perfect if he could have someone who knew the ad speak on his behalf. no, please, i think it would be a wonderfully nice thing for you to do. i'm sorry if my usually caustic behavior led you to believe i was being sarcastic.
It's cool. You just never know who is being sarcastic or not on here. Thank you :)
