re: Errors from the NYS English Regents Exam

I always knew Lady Macbeth had balls. I should play her some day. Now who should be Macbeth?

re: Errors from the NYS English Regents Exam

Came across these today:

"MacBeth stabbed Duncan and killed him to death but he didn't feel anything."

"Othello was a black man who married this white gril [sic] named Dizzy Mona."

"The best part of OF MICE AND MEN was the denouement and then it was over." (The kid spelled "denouement" correctly!)

"When we started reading INHERIT THE WIND I thought it would be about a weatherman but it turned out to be something about the bible"

"...then there was the other book we read. I can't remember its name but the main guy killed another guy and everyone got mad at him so they were fighting until the book was finished"

....I swear, I couldn't make these things up if I tried!!!!!!!

The gril named Dizzy Mona is hilarious, but sad at the same time. What has happened to students today. I would have never been that unprepared for a Regents exam. Did any of hese kids actually pass? Just remember DollyPop......it's the kids, not you.

re: Errors from the NYS English Regents Exam

I'm scared. I take the Regents next year and I can't even fathom how someone could write any of those things. The last few Dollypop posted really get me... not only are they glaringly inaccurate (and hysterical), but my English teacher has been drilling into our heads since September that plot-retelling = indescribably bad. So, as much as these are funny, they're also horrifying.

On a different note: it is good to know you can kill someone without that nasty side-effect of death...

It all boils down to our students not listening or being strung out on something in class. They have only a vague odea of what's going on. I also feel that they've got these idiotic rap "tunes" going through their heads even if their not wearing the headphones.

I can't wait to retire!

Certainly home environment has a great deal to do with it, but I also feel that these kids by into a culture that esposed failure and tuning out. Du rags are the most popular fashion accessory in our school and the bling bling can blind you.

Believe it or not, we do have some fine students and several of my kids got Regents scores in the 90's. Of course those are the kids who come to class on time and are attentive.

This makes wonder about where the parents are in this. Don't they realize what is going on with he education of their children? When I was in high school we were all expected to do well and it was something we were proud of. I think today many kids think a well rounded and successful educatio is a sign of failure. Times have changed I am sad to say. I was studying Macbeth and Hamlet when I was in the 6th grade.

A friend of mine also took the SATs stoned and she did really well. She said the pot made everything pop out and the questions were easier to understand or something.

i don't think you should attribute this to the way a person dresses (unless i'm reading what you posted wrong).

it's really up to the individual, their upbringing.

i grew up in the inner city, the projects to be exact. i think i did fine.

my friend kenny, listens to rap and wears the *bling*, the du-rag, the whole nine... he just got his bachelor's degreein business administration and he's planning on working on his masters.

it's truly up to the individual, what's inside....

re: Errors from the NYS English Regents Exam

I guess this is pretty widespread. The kids in my school don't place any importance on academic achievement, but sometimes it seems like the administration doesn't, either. Doing well on the boys' lacrosse team will get you more acclaim than getting straight A's in honors classes, doing well on the Regents, etc. We have students who are going to Harvard and Yale and all these ivy league schools, but up to now, they haven't had anything to show for their hard work.

The honors students are the ones being looked down on by the majority of the school (I mean student-wise). We're the ones being ridiculed for taking time to study and put effort into our work. Then they think they can just sponge off us when push comes to shove (I still haven't gotten over the fact that some upperclassmen asked me before the Living Environment Regents if I could move my scantron towards his desk, so he could cheat, then when I refused, moved to the girl behind me and asked her the same thing).

However, as Marquise said: it is entirely up to the individual, but I think upbringing plays some part too. I'll admit if I didn't have my parents constantly pushing me to do well, I probably wouldn't. I really have them to thank for a lot of what I've done (and haven't done), so far, and I know a lot of my friends feel the same way.
