FUNNY GAMES is one of the best films of the year...

I can't really recommend this widely because I know a lot of people are going to hate it, but if you're in the mood for a fascinating cinematic experiment, this is the movie for you. It's an exercise in screwing with one's expectations and whose side you should be on in the normal home-invasion thriller? Do you want the family to get out alive or do you want their captors to sadistically torture and murder them?

In addition, it's more interesting than most remakes because Michael Haneke, the director of the original, also did this one. Why did he want to do a shot-by-shot remake of his own film in a different language and with a different cast? Who knows but him?
