This is a ballet/Dame story. I hope you don't mind.
Many years ago Dame Alicia Markova the new artistic director of the ballet division of The MET, was being introduced to employees as Madame Markova. She asked to be addressed as Dame Alicia not because that is what she wanted but because it was "what the queen wants."
