In honor of this three-day weekend, signaling among many things the dog days of summer and the initial musings of fall, I thought I would ask you what your favorite "Labor Day" movies are.
It's a great weekend to curl up with a loved one, or a pet, or a bottle of your favorite “poison,” or a syringe (joke!)… and watch a flick.
My personal favorite is the perennial favorite “Picnic,” for obvious reasons… since the story takes place on Labor Day weekend… and in KANSAS no less! (my old home state)…
Roz Russell’s performance in it has more impact on me with each viewing. Sheer brilliance.
Are there any other favorites that make you think of Labor Day, or this time of year?
Others I have a “hankering” for this weekend (some are my “guilty pleasures”):
When Harry Met Sally
Stand By Me
Ordinary People
Summer Stock
State Fair
Charlotte’s Web
Peyton Place
Far From Heaven
Magnificent Obsession
The Goodbye Girl
Audrey Rose
To Kill a Mockingbird
One True Thing
Tom Sawyer (the ‘70s musical)
National Velvet
Mr. North
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Fried Green Tomatoes

Not a movie, but I always loved "It's Labor Day, Charlie Brown."
Wait, that was "It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown."

Namo---After my favorite bottle, they both seem to morph into the same holiday anyway.
EDIT: Jesus, I sounded like a big drunk. I'm just ready for the weekend... not the "Lost Weekend."

I suppose I could add some movies that actually have to do with "labor." Nine To Five is a good one.
I would also add...
Norma Rae
How Green Was My Valley
Working (the PBS version of the musical)
Mamie---I know what it is! "Tequila Mockingbird!"

Posted: 9/1/06 at 10:51pmIt's definitely going to be a movie weekend for me. Funny you should mention Ordinary People, best12. The DVD was in my hand earlier this evening, but I opted for Taxi Driver instead. Ordinary People is now slated for tomorrow night. Some other possibilites for this weekend are... Coming Home, Midnight Cowboy, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and American Beauty.
